Conversations with Jessica Land

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Land.

Hi Jessica, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey started with creativity and curiosity. I was exposed to a computer at a young age, and it quickly became my favorite tool. I would spend hours making music and then designing graphics to go along with it, just for fun. Without realizing it, I was teaching myself design, branding, and digital marketing as I promoted my own projects online.

As I got older, I started volunteering at my church, offering to make graphics and visuals for events and services. People began to notice my work, and soon they started asking who made it and if I could do something for them too. Eventually, they began offering to pay me. That’s when I realized this could be more than just a hobby.

I started charging for my work and built my first client base through word of mouth. The more I created, the more opportunities came. At the time, I was working as a bank teller. I was 21, and it was 2013. I told my manager I planned to leave in a few weeks to pursue my business full time. When he asked what it would take to keep me, the numbers didn’t compare to what I knew I could earn on my own. I was ready to bet on myself.

Now, over 12 years later, that creative hustle has grown into a full business. What started with simple graphics has evolved into full-scale marketing management. I’ve had the opportunity to work with churches, nonprofits, artists, and business startups, helping each of them grow their brand and connect with their audience. In 2026, I plan to expand again, focusing on consulting for ministries and mission-driven organizations that need help building systems and strategies for long-term impact.

It all started with a computer, some curiosity, and the confidence to keep saying yes.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. There have been times when I trusted the wrong people and ended up not getting paid. Some even used my work without permission, and unfortunately, a lot of that happened in church settings, which made it even more disappointing.

There were moments when I felt discouraged and unsure if I could pay my bills. I honestly questioned if I had made a mistake leaving my job. There were seasons when I had to pick up a part-time job just to supplement my income and stay afloat.

Even now, I still face challenges. As a graphic designer and a musician, my work is constantly being critiqued. It comes with the territory, but that doesn’t make it easier. Sometimes it can sting, especially when I’m dealing with creative block or feeling drained. It’s tough when a client tells you they don’t like something but can’t offer any clear direction, and you’re on a tight deadline trying to push through a mental wall.

Those moments are hard, and they don’t always get easier, but I’ve learned to push through them. I remind myself why I started and stay grounded in my purpose. Every challenge has helped build resilience, and every setback has taught me something valuable. I’m still growing, still learning, and still creating. That, to me, is a victory in itself.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a creative strategist and digital content manager, currently working part-time in my business while also serving as a Worship Director and Communications Director at a local church. My work centers on branding, marketing, and visual storytelling. I help people and organizations show up with clarity, excellence, and purpose online.

Over the years, I’ve supported churches, nonprofits, artists, and startups with everything from logo design and social media management to full content strategies and digital campaigns. I’m known for being resourceful, creative, and organized. I know how to take an idea, no matter how rough, and turn it into something that works and connects. I love being the person people call when they need someone who can figure it out, make it look good, and keep things moving.

My background as both a musician and a designer gives me a unique perspective. I understand what it means to create under pressure, lead teams, and communicate across different styles and personalities. Clients often tell me they appreciate how I can bring structure to their vision while keeping the heart of it intact.

What I’m most proud of is the trust I’ve built. Many of my clients come back to me years later because they know I understand their voice and care about their message. I’ve grown from designing basic flyers to managing full-scale marketing efforts, and now I’m preparing to launch a consulting branch for ministries and mission-driven organizations in 2026.

What sets me apart is that I genuinely care about both the message and the mission. I bring purpose, flexibility, and follow-through to every project. Whether I’m creating content, directing a team, or building a system from scratch, I show up fully and find solutions that make the vision work.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I’m originally from St. Louis, Missouri, which is much smaller than Houston. What I love most about Houston is the big city energy and the sense of opportunity. There’s so much happening here, and it’s inspiring to see minorities, especially Black people, doing well, starting businesses, and thriving. I also really appreciate the diversity. It’s something I didn’t experience in other cities I’ve lived in, and it makes Houston feel more welcoming and connected.

What I like least would have to be the traffic and the weather. I enjoy the mild winters, but the storms and extreme heat can be overwhelming. There have even been times when the weather caused damage to my home, which has been frustrating and stressful. So while I love living here overall, those are definitely some of the harder parts.
