Exploring Life & Business with Kirill Abdullaev of Studios Boheme

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kirill Abdullaev.

Hi Kirill, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My wife and I have been passionate about photography for quite a few years now. What started as a hobby—simply capturing moments with an entry-level DSLR—gradually grew into something much more. Initially, we focused on photographing family, friends, and exploring interesting locations. Over time, my interest in photography deepened, leading me to upgrade my equipment and experiment with more complex setups.

In 2020, as my wife and I were planning our wedding in Moscow, we made the decision to have our photos taken in a professional studio. This decision was partly driven by our desire to avoid weather-related uncertainties. Moscow is home to hundreds of studios, each offering a unique blend of stunning decorations and creative setups. We were truly inspired by the variety and the innovation we saw in those spaces, and it sparked the idea of creating something similar here in Houston.

When we began searching for a space to bring our vision to life, we noticed that the Houston market lacked many studios that offered this kind of flexibility. Interestingly, around the same time, a few more studios began to emerge, which I believe reflects the growing demand for this type of service. To set ourselves apart, we decided to not only offer studio rentals but also provide photography services, creating a complete, all-in-one experience for our clients.

Since then, we’ve gradually built a strong presence in the Houston photography scene. Today, we are proud to have developed a loyal clientele, with many repeat customers and referrals. This has allowed us to serve a diverse range of clients, helping them bring their unique ideas to life, and further establish our brand in the community.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey, without a doubt, has been anything but smooth. Initially, we started with two separate spaces, with the idea that we would rent out the studios and occasionally use them for our own photography projects. However, we quickly realized that this model wasn’t sustainable. The photography market is incredibly saturated, and many photographers are competing primarily on price, which made it difficult to attract enough business for the studio rental aspect.

We also found that established photographers, who could afford to pass on studio rental costs to their clients, typically already had their own spaces, or preferred using their own locations. As a result, we decided to pivot and focus more heavily on our photography services, rather than the studio rental. While studio rentals still generate some revenue, the vast majority of our income now comes from photography.

Another key lesson we learned was the cost associated with maintaining two separate spaces. To streamline operations and reduce overhead, we decided to consolidate everything into a single studio. We reimagined and redesigned the space, incorporating our most popular setups and decorations into one cohesive location. This not only helped us cut costs but also allowed us to maintain the high quality of service our clients have come to expect.

So, as you can see, it’s been a bit of a bumpy road, but it’s been a journey of constant adaptation and learning. There have been many other challenges which I am not going to get into now, but each challenge has taught us valuable lessons, and we’re better for it!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At our photography studio, we specialize in creating bold, visually striking images that stand out through vibrant colors, intricate lighting, and creative setups. We are passionate about using photography to showcase the energy, personality, and emotion of each subject we photograph. Whether it’s for a personal portrait, a family session, or a corporate event, we take pride in creating images that not only capture moments but also evoke a sense of drama and artistry.

We believe in the power of dynamic color and lighting to transform an ordinary photograph into something extraordinary. Our approach is highly customized—every shoot is designed around the individual needs and vision of our clients, ensuring that each image reflects their unique style. From the lighting setups to the backgrounds, every detail is thoughtfully crafted to create an experience and capture what is meaningful to the person in front of the camera.

Above all, we want our clients to know that our studio is a place where they can fully express themselves and collaborate on creative projects that are one-of-a-kind. Whether you’re seeking a dramatic portrait, a vibrant event shoot, or an artistic project with intricate lighting and color, we are here to bring your vision to life with energy and precision. Our clients trust us to not only capture their moments but to elevate them into pieces of art.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The photography industry is constantly evolving, and over the next 5-10 years, I can see major shifts happening, particularly driven by advancements in technology and changing consumer expectations. We’re already seeing more integration of AI and automated editing tools, which could make certain aspects of photography more accessible. With these tools becoming more mainstream, I believe there’s going to be even more of a focus on personal style, technical execution and artistic vision in photography.

As trends come and go, it’s important not to get caught up in chasing the latest fad. I believe that the photographers who stand out long-term will be the ones who stay true to their unique style and vision, rather than constantly pivoting to fit whatever is popular at the moment. The essence of great photography isn’t about mimicking trends—it’s about creating images that are timeless and meaningful.

For us, the key will be staying authentic to our vision of bold, vibrant imagery, and intricate lighting. Trends will always shift, but the core principles of storytelling, creativity, and emotional impact will remain as the foundation. We want to create photographs that our clients will look at in 5, 10, 50 years and still feel the same energy and fondness as the day they took these.
