Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendy Hackney.
Wendy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Edible Moments started by complete accident 5 years ago! I was fortunate not to be working when I had my two babies. When my youngest turned one, I had the time & opportunity to bake & decorate her first birthday cake. I wanted to create that “Kodak” moment all first time Mother’s hope for :o) My husband and I do not have any family members here in Texas, so we just invited a couple neighbors over… of course to celebrate, but I really wanted someone else in our pictures to show Ashlynn there were people at her first birthday… tee hee.
From that small gathering of 6-8 people, my phone rang a couple weeks later. It was a neighbor’s friend asking me to do her daughter’s cake. I respectfully declined advising her that I do not do cakes. My neighbor called and “yelled at me.” I got guilted into doing the cake. Another couple weeks, my phone rings again and then again and really, another call?! I remember saying to my husband: I wish these people would stop calling me :o)
Ironically, during that time, I knew I wanted to go back to work, but not necessarily “Corporate America.” I was still a new wife & now a new Mother to a 2 and 1-year-old. I always pray for strength and direction. One night, I literally shot up out of bed at 2:00a.m.-ish… something told me: Look into this “cake thing.” I remember answering back in my head: What? Really?! And the rest is HISTORY….
My degree is in Hospitality Management and my background is versed with restaurants, meeting planning, & corporate coffee training, as highlights. Ya never know where life is going to take you! I always tell people, if someone told me 6 years ago, I would be designing wedding cakes for Houston’s brides… my answer would have been: You have me mistaken for someone else! I am never afraid to reinvent myself & learn new things. I absolutely LOVE what I do and it’s been a pleasant surprise to be blessed with this amazing journey!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it’s never a smooth road. Starting a small business takes a lot of hours & perseverance. Personal family time gets tucked away as you try to balance & explore new learning curves. Gaining capital to start your business is always a struggle and learning all the administrative tools behind the scenes and not so fun stuff like insurance. You feel beat up the first couple of years and always question: Am I doing the right thing?
I am extremely thankful for our wedding industry peers, WHWP, West Houston Wedding Professionals, and BENG, Bridal & Event Networking Group, who have supported me. The first years are like going through boot camp and the bonds that are created with your peers are priceless.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Having a down-to-earth disposition and a sense of humor has carried me a long way in this world 🙂 Having God in my heart is definitely a quality I hold dear and I know that I will always keep moving forward with positive momentum with him walking by my side.
Success is building relationships one person at a time. Success is instilling values in one another. Success is creating the moments & being a part of the adventure that builds and leaves a legacy. Lead with a servant heart, find your passion, and the money will come.
