Meet Corey Scott of Makeup2go by CS in North Houston “Magnolia”

Today we’d like to introduce you to Corey Scott.

Corey, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a girl growing up I was never really that “girly” and into Makeup and Hair. My mother could not get me into a dress for the life of her. I suppose you could say I was more of a tom-boy; “Always outside, fishing, camping, and rollerblading.

It was not until middle school that I started wearing more makeup and doing my hair every day.

My first Job in the Beauty Industry was Darque Tan, tanning salon. I was hired on as a manager for the location off of 59 and 1960. I was young and did not care for the 45 min drive every day from The Woodlands so I was only there for 8 months.

Shortly after leaving Darque Tan I took a position with Visible Changes as a receptionist. From there I went to JC Penny Day Spa and Salon where I absorbed all the responsibilities of running the Front Desk while the manager went out on Maternity leave. While working at JC Penny I had heard that Dillards was hiring in their Cosmetic Department. It was hourly and more than I was currently making.
I went in and was hired on the spot for Clinique.

Clinique was where it all began. I loved the seminars/education classes at hotel banquet rooms and free products you would receive at every education class. After a few years at Dillards I decided to get my Cosmetology license at Aveda.

After Aveda, I decided I was definitely more into makeup and moved on to apply at Macys. This was a Department where you not only made hourly but you could also make commission on everything you sold. I went in and applied at Lancôme. I was immediately re-directed and hired on for Impulse Cosmetics.

Impulse Cosmetics is similar to a mini Sephora. They have over 20 brands such as Urban Decay / Smashbox/Philosophy/ Benefit etc. I was ecstatic to be trained and attend classes and seminars on all of these brands. This was where I fell in love with ingredients, brand knowledge, selling tactics, and what when and how products worked on the skin and why.

This was one of my favorite jobs in Cosmetics to this day, other than my company now. It was just fun. It was work, but it definitely did not feel like it.

This was a place you came and turned up ACDC, Led Zepplin, and Otis Redding and played with makeup and skincare. Clients had a blast too. Yes, we literally had our own cd player where we were allowed to play whatever we want and wear anything that was fun in the Macys Cosmetic Department.

Here, I learned from my manager what business was all about and how to run a successful and exciting company that employees as well as our clients enjoyed coming to.

It was bittersweet when I applied to Nordstrom Houston Galleria. I loved my current Job but knew I was ready for Management. I was hired on the spot for the Smashbox Cosmetics Manager and put in my 2 weeks with Macys. This was where I learned the most about Business. I perfected the art of selling and boutiquing the sale, hitting and surpassing goals, hiring and letting go freelance support, planning and executing events, marketing, inventory, etc. Nordstrom taught me about guest service and what it means to put the customers first.

Upon leaving Nordstrom, due to the hr. drive to and from every day during peak traffic hours, I took a position closer to home. My husband and I had a little boy and the hours were becoming too intense at the time.

Ulta was my next adventure. I loved my job as Prestige Manager. I had over 30+ brands and an amazing team. Here I trained and was trained myself on all 30+ brands. My time here was spent managing and running business. Events were weekly on different brands and creating them with my team was always challenging but fun none the less.

While working with Ulta, my husband and I started to talk about where I thought I wanted to end up with my career. When you work in retail, retail hours can be hard on family life. I loved what I was doing but I was seeing that I needed more time with my family. We were discussing having another little one as well.

After a lot of thought I decided to put in my two weeks and start my Own Company.

I wanted to take everything I learned throughout my career and apply the best parts to my very Own Business.

The first week out of retail, I sat brainstorming for hours. I sat trying to come up with a name and logo first and foremost. I wanted to be on-location as I did not have the capital to open up a store right off the bat. I came up with Makeup2go by CS (Makup2go by Corey Scott).

Once I had the name and logo it was all uphill from there!!! The funny thing about owning my own business was that it was very similar to working in Retail Management and at the same time it was completely different.

It was similar in the sense that you run the companies the same way. You have to market, then build your clientele, then sell a good product with great customer service. It’s completely different because you do all the marketing yourself, you build your own clientele yourself, and instead of being handed a good product to sell, you are selling your service.

When this whole thing started, it started as an idea. Just a thought, that lead to a discussion that has taken me and my family where we are today. It has been such an amazing experience so far and I am excited for what is to come next… We have had a ton of our clients ask us if we are ever going to have a store…… With a lot of thinking and brainstorming, we are excited to announce that YES, a storefront is on the agenda…. So stay tuned!!!

Has it been a smooth road?
Most of the obstacles were in the beginning. Adjusting to my new schedule, and working out all the kinks with logo, name, website etc.

It honestly has been a fun process.
