Today we’d like to introduce you to Assane Sy.
Hi Assane, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in Senegal and moved to New York six years ago to pursue my education. Since then, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of the cultural and social differences between the two continents. I earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Hunter College and completed a photography certificate program at the International Center of Photography (ICP), the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and the NYFA Immigrant Program. Now interning at Penumbra Foundation for Fujifilm.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yes, it has been smooth for the most part. However, I did face some challenges during my early days in America, especially when I was still unfamiliar with the language and culture. I struggled to communicate and found it difficult to make friends at first, as I tend to step back and observe before forming connections.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Senegalese photographer based in New York, working at the intersection of tradition, culture, and identity. My practice blends documentary, portraiture, and fashion to create a distinct visual language that speaks to diasporic experience and generational memory. I am known for centering untold stories and cultural rituals, such as my ongoing work on the Grand Magal pilgrimage. What sets me apart is my ability to bridge worlds—honoring where I come from while navigating where I am now. I’m most proud of using my work to connect people, preserve cultural heritage, and spark deeper understanding across borders.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I learned to have confidence in myself. That sets me apart from others. I believe in working, making projects, and executing them well, whether it’s collaborative or personal.
In addition, I learned that being an artist comes with building a community. My photography has allowed me to build a huge network within the short time I spent in America.
