Brian, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I attended Emory University and graduated with a degree in psychology. My intentions were to go to law school when I moved back to Houston; however, my father, who was in real estate, introduced me to a CD-course about buying properties directly from sellers. At the time, I did not expect to be successful in this business, but I ended up closing a transaction within seven weeks at the age of 22, and I was hooked.
I established Big State Home Buyers in 2006 with a simple goal – to personally help struggling homeowners resolve their individual home-selling complications. I understand that a home holds a strong sentimental value and that homeowners who need to sell their home want the process to be effortless, transparent and worry-free; those values are extremely important to me. In fact, that’s the heart of Big State Home Buyers. I have closed more than 3,000 transactions in 10 years and, throughout the past decade, I have established myself as a trusted, knowledgeable and savvy expert in real estate investing and every aspect of the home selling process.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting any business is never smooth sailing at the beginning, and I am constantly learning new aspects about the home-buying and selling industry. One of the most challenging experiences our team has faced recently was how to respond to Hurricane Harvey. Our call volume tripled in a matter of days after the storm destroyed many parts of the city. We received a multitude of requests simultaneously due to flooded homes throughout the city. Our entire team had to step up their game to maintain our high-level of customer service and responsiveness and to achieve our goal to help struggling homeowners resolve their home-selling complications. As time-consuming and demanding this influx of requests became, our team successfully purchased over 100 flooded homes in the Houston area in the matter of a few months.
