Today we’d like to introduce you to Dakarai Akil.
Hi Dakarai, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Houston, Texas, where my love for storytelling first came to life on stage at The Ensemble Theatre. That early spark in the performing arts stayed with me, but during high school, basketball took center stage. I dedicated myself fully to the game, eventually earning a Division I scholarship to Sam Houston State University—where I made history as the school’s all-time leader in career three-pointers.
Though the opportunity to play professionally was within reach, I made the life-changing decision to walk away from basketball and return to my first passion: acting and filmmaking. That meant starting all over. I worked multiple jobs, often on film sets for little or no pay, just to be around the craft and sharpen my voice as both an actor and a director.
Before stepping into the world of feature films, I wrote, directed, and starred in a series of short films that went on to achieve national and international success, earning awards and recognition for both my performance and direction.
Today, I’m proud to be the lead in several feature films now streaming on major platforms like Apple TV, Amazon Prime, Peacock, and Tubi. My journey—from Houston’s stages to college records, to the grind of independent filmmaking—is a testament to faith, discipline, and the belief that your passion will make room for you when you stay true to it.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not a smooth ride. Many obstacles came from lack of opportunities which lead me to start doing my own films to sharpen my craft. After essentially mastering doing a lot with a little, now the challenges come with higher paying opportunities and roles that test my range and not just stereotype roles or roles I’ve already done. Houston is on the come up but there is a huge gap in opportunities for working actors as myself . I have faith that bigger and better things will be coming to Houston , and with the films I’ve done recently, believe they will shed light on the quality we have out here in Houston.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an actor who began my journey in theater as a kid then later in college at Sam Houston predominantly known for being an all conference basketball player where I decided to sacrifice my potential professional career to dive into film. I discovered my passion for storytelling and the art of fully inhabiting a character. I specialize in bringing emotional depth and authenticity to every role, whether it’s a gritty drama, an intense action piece, or a heartfelt family story. I’m known for diving deep into character—understanding not just the lines, but the psychology, the history, and the heart behind every person I portray.
What I’m most proud of is stepping into the role of not just an actor, but a creator. I’ve reached a point in my career where I’m telling my own stories—stories rooted in truth, complexity, and representation—and I’m committed to building opportunities for other talented artists in Houston. I want our city’s voices to be heard on the biggest stages, and I’m using my platform to make that happen.
What sets me apart is my range, my relentless preparation, and my dual perspective as both performer and storyteller. I don’t wait for the perfect role to find me—I create it, and I create space for others to shine alongside me.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
People can work with me by connecting on upcoming film projects—whether it’s acting, producing, or bringing fresh stories to life on screen. I’m always open to collaborating with fellow creatives who share a passion for authentic, impactful storytelling, especially those from Houston and underrepresented communities.
Support can come in many forms: partnering on productions, investing in independent films, providing resources for local shoots, or simply sharing and promoting the work when it’s released. I also welcome opportunities to speak, teach, or mentor aspiring actors who want to break into the industry.
At the end of the day, collaboration with me means building something meaningful together—projects that entertain, inspire, and leave a lasting mark. The best first step is reaching out directly through my professional email or social channels so we can start the conversation.
