Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Hatton.
Hi Mary, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started around 2012 with my food blog, The Cake Chica, sharing recipes I made while teaching myself how to photograph them in a way that made people crave the food that I was creating. Over the years my love for photography grew beyond food, and I began capturing documentary-style images for church, events and brands for social media. This past year, I attended Texas School of Professional Photography and it ignited my passion even more, inspiring me to refine my craft and expand my creative vision.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. I’ve explored different directions, like real estate photography, only to realize my heart wasn’t in it the way it is with food and documentary-style photography. And like many creatives, I’ve wrestled with imposter syndrome along the way. But each challenge has helped me get clearer about my passion and more confident in the work I create.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in food, documentary-style, and lifestyle photography, but at the heart of it, I’m a storyteller. I’m known for capturing mouthwatering images of food that make people want to take a bite, but also for my documentary-style photography where I blend into the background so people can just be themselves. That’s when the real magic happens. Those authentic, unposed moments where you can feel the joy and connection without it ever feeling staged. What really sets me apart is my love for learning and growing. I don’t ever want to feel like I’ve “arrived” because there’s always something new to try or get better at. That curiosity keeps me excited and inspired, so I’m always pushing myself to bring fresh ideas and better skills to every shoot. It’s that drive that helps me create work that feels fresh and real.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I love building relationships through my work, so whether you want to collaborate on a fun project, hire me for photography, or just support by sharing my work and spreading the word, every connection means a lot. I’m open to new ideas and partnerships that help bring authentic stories and beautiful images to life.
