Conversations with Stephanie Houseal

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Houseal.

Hi Stephanie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I became interested in photography in high school when film was the only option and prints were developed in the dark room. My interest spanned through college and beyond where I continued studying and learning as much as I could. I’ve always been drawn to photographing people, so portraiture was a natural choice for me. Along the way I discovered newborn photography and decided that I wanted to open a business focusing on newborns and families. Creating lasting memories during the fleeting early years of family life is something that I absolutely love. As I became a mother myself, my love for my work deepened.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My business journey hasn’t always been a smooth road, because as I grew my own family, having 4 children in 5 years, my time for the business was limited. The juggle of motherhood and business ownership is not easy and there have been many times I’ve chosen to take a step back from the business in order to be more present with my children. I also opened a studio space in 2020 and a few months later Covid hit. After almost a year in the studio I made the difficult decision to close the doors and reevaluate the business. Although at the time I felt a little defeated closing the studio space, it allowed me to pivot and transition into lifestyle in-home photography, which I have found I like even more. The shift has allowed for more artistic creativity as each home provides a different space to photograph and I find that families are more at ease in their home environment.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in lifestyle in-home newborn and family photography. My aesthetic style is light with the use of as much natural light as possible, utilizing soft tones. I like to keep visual elements simple to let the emotion of my subjects shine through. With other 10 years of experience photographing families and newborns, I know how to soothe fussy babies, get toddlers to cooperate and help parents to relax and enjoy the experience. It’s important to me that I provide an experience where my clients feel taken care of from start to finish. As a mom of 4 myself, I also understand the delicate state of mothers during postpartum and I put their comfort and ease at the forefront. It’s my job to not only create beautiful photographs, but also to provide an enjoyable and professional experience.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I struggled with infertility so the subject matter of my work is very personal to me.
