We recently had the chance to connect with Hassan Hilliard and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Hassan , thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: Have you ever been glad you didn’t act fast?
Yes. A long time ago, a mentor told me to think about these three things:
– Does it have to be said?
– Does it have to be said right now?
– Does it have to be said right now by me?
That has carried me a long way in my assessing how immediate a response has to be; as well as what type of response is required.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Hassan Hilliard. I am a mixed-media creator in Houston, Texas. My business/brand is P3 Media, which encompasses content creation, public speaking, my flagship podcast (Qualified, The Podcast), and directing/producing. My introduction into the media space was over 20 years ago as a photographer and graphic designer. I was one of the first independent photographers to have a website with over 100,000 hits in web traffic and the first to launch party for a virtual model portal. My podcast started in 2020 and ran until 2023 charting #16 in Apple Podcasts in Business, as well as allowing me the opportunity to branch into other ventures such as audio book production and documentaries. In 2024, I collaborated with ATTAWA Clothing Co. under their Fashion, Arts, and Instrumentals sub-brand to co-produce “The Art of Writing”. This short-film project went on to earn 2 selections and 2 awards in the the festival circuit.
What’s next for P3 Media? Well, I have another short-film collaboration with ATTAWA Clothing Co. currently scheduled to be shown in Houston next month (September) and 2 more film projects in development. It has been a wonderful journey in media for me and don’t intend to stop.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My father.
He empowered me to be whatever I wanted to be. He gave me what he learned from our family and his own experiences before I was born, strong ethics. No matter if it was a math homework, a science project, or cutting the grass, he always wanted me to answer the questions, “Are you finished? Are you proud of what you’ve done?”
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, many times; but almost doesn’t count.
In my personal life, I try to make sure what I’m doing is in my best interest and can be of some help for myself and/or for others. In business, this a bit different as I honor contracts even if the work is becoming difficult; however, I will call for a conversation if things become undeliverable.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I would think they would say integrity is a really high value to me. I look for it in them, and they get it with me. There are a lot of values/virtues that we hold near and dear to us, this is mine. Respect is earned, trust is earned, but I believe integrity is engrained.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. How do you know when you’re out of your depth?
The initial question in this interview was in the nature of being glad I(you) didn’t act fast on something. My answer then relates to this question as I now take a very cautious and meticulous approach to learning the scope and audience to the task or contract I am presented with. I can easily find myself out of my depth if I am not aware of the full undertaking of the assignment. However, I don’t have to be the lone wolf in this; I can recruit assistance and delegate very well. It’s just easier to do either when you know what the job entails.
