Michael Newman on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Michael Newman and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Michael, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of my day are all about setting a strong foundation for my health and mindset. I start by waking up early and drinking water to rehydrate. Then I spend about an hour at the gym, focusing on both strength training and cardio to boost my energy and mental clarity. After my workout, I take time to stretch and do a short mindfulness practice, which helps me center myself for the day ahead. I finish my morning routine with a healthy breakfast to fuel my body and prepare for a productive day.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Michael Newman, widely known as The King of STEM; an educator, national speaker, consultant, published author, and passionate advocate for making Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math accessible, exciting, and transformative for all learners.

With over a decade in education, I’ve taught Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 3rd grade Math/Science and now proudly serve as an Elementary STEM Facilitator in La Porte ISD. In this role, I work alongside teachers and district leaders to design and implement meaningful STEM initiatives that prepare students for the future. My experience has shown me that STEM education is more than just subjects—it’s a powerful tool for building confidence, inspiring creativity, and opening doors to limitless possibilities for students of all ages.

As The King of STEM, I bring my expertise to professional development, keynote speaking, consulting, and district-wide STEM initiatives across the country. I specialize in creating engaging, hands-on trainings that give educators the tools, strategies, and inspiration they need to integrate STEM into their classrooms, regardless of grade level or experience. My sessions are known for their energy, practicality, and creativity, empowering educators to see STEM not as an extra program, but as an essential, exciting part of learning.

In addition to my work as a facilitator and speaker, I am also a published author, sharing my insights and experiences to help educators and families bring STEM to life in meaningful ways. My writing reflects my belief that STEM education should be approachable, equitable, and designed to meet the needs of every learner. Recently released my new children’s book called Toby and the Magic of STEM, on Amazon.

My ultimate mission as The King of STEM is to equip educators, inspire students, and transform learning. I want every child to walk away from a STEM experience believing they are capable of achieving greatness and every teacher to feel empowered to create those experiences.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
“The part of me that stayed small to fit into others’ expectations. I’ve served my purpose as a classroom teacher working quietly behind the scenes, but now it’s time to fully step into my role as a leader, speaker, and advocate who amplifies the power of STEM education on a larger scale.”

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear that has held me back the most is the lingering question of “What if I’m not good enough?” What if I fail? What if I step into a bigger role; as a speaker, consultant, and leader; and people don’t see the value I bring? For years, that “what if” kept me second-guessing myself and playing small, even when I knew I had the passion, ideas, and drive to make a real difference.

But what I’ve learned is this: growth requires moving through those fears. Every time I’ve challenged that voice; by writing, speaking, or leading; I’ve proven to myself that not only am I good enough, but my story and my work can inspire others to believe they are good enough too.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I am deeply committed to the belief that every child; regardless of background, resources, or circumstance; deserves access to meaningful, hands-on STEM experiences that spark curiosity and build confidence. This conviction drives my ongoing work to develop district-wide and community-focused STEM initiatives that break down barriers and create equitable learning opportunities for all students.

As a published STEM author, I’m passionate about creating resources that make STEM approachable and engaging for both educators and students, helping to bring these transformative experiences into classrooms and homes.

No matter how long it takes, I remain dedicated to empowering educators with the tools and strategies they need to deliver impactful STEM learning. This isn’t just a project; it’s a lifelong mission to inspire the next generation of thinkers, creators, and problem-solvers.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
When I’m gone, I hope the story people tell about me is one of impact, inspiration, and unwavering belief in the potential of every child and educator. I want to be remembered not just as a teacher or a speaker, but as someone who broke down barriers who refused to let fear or doubt stop me; and who used STEM as a powerful tool to ignite confidence, creativity, and curiosity in thousands of young learners.

I hope they say that I showed up with passion and purpose, that I didn’t settle for the status quo, and that I dedicated my life to making STEM accessible and meaningful for all, especially those who needed it most. I want them to remember the energy and heart I brought to every workshop, every classroom, every conversation and how I lifted up educators to believe in their own power to change lives.

Most importantly, I hope the story is one of hope and empowerment that through my work, students discovered they could be problem-solvers, innovators, and leaders; that they walked away knowing they were worthy and capable of greatness; and that educators felt equipped, inspired, and valued.

If that’s the legacy I leave, then I will know my purpose was fulfilled.
