We’re looking forward to introducing you to Whitehaven. Check out our conversation below.
Whitehaven, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
I don’t think most people think about the time investment bands make for shows – we typically book our shows 1-3 months ahead of time, and start practice as soon as we book it. That means that in most cases, we spend at least a month practicing for a single show; often a 45 minute set.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
We’re an alternative rock band based in Katy, Texas called Whitehaven! Our unique sound comes from the different musical backgrounds of our members – from a jazz bassist to a metal drummer. We’ve all participated in vastly distinct groups, yet come together to make one large sound.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
We learned the most about the local music scene simply by observing older bands. We started this band out pretty young; we were all around 13-14 at the time. We’ve always considered this a blessing and a curse; although we didn’t have the ability to play many venues or participate in the scene a lot due to our age, we had a lot of opportunities to experiment and learn.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
During the older days of our band, we contemplated ending things whenever our drummer took an extended hiatus. After about two months of stagnation, we felt that our band was going nowhere. However, we ultimately decided to pull through, and our drummer eventually returned after resolving personal conflicts. This event taught us to keep our heads above the water, even when it feels like we’re drowning.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Definitely not. We’re different people when on and off-stage. If anything, the versions of ourselves when acting as performers is the most authentic representations of ourselves; we’re doing what we truly love. Our bassist, for example, is a quiet person outside of the stage. Yet, whenever he’s on stage, he moves around, interacts with the audience, and effectively acts as a second frontman.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
We hope that when we’re gone, people will tell a story of energy and musicality. That’s all we can hope for – to be performers, and to be good at it.
