We’re looking forward to introducing you to Rebekah Dahl. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Rebekah , it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Coffee immediately, followed by a Greek yogurt with flaxseeds, colostrum and chia seeds sprinkled on top. Then I take my coffee into my meditation room and I journal first. I write down how I feel and what my goals are for the day. Then I read something inspiring. Then 15 minutes of yoga followed by 15-30 minutes of meditation.
Once I do all that I feel ready to tackle emails and phone calls, get dressed and go to the gym for a little cardio.
After that I shower and do a vocal warm up simultaneously.
Then I’m ready for whatever the day brings!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Rebekah Dahl. I’m the co owner of The Music Box Theater along with my husband Brad Scarborough. We are Houston’s only cabaret theater that performs every weekend and we’ve been in business for 14 years. We create unique shows that blend live popular music from across the decades with our own brand of sketch comedy. Each show has a theme and we change the shows every couple of months. We sing everything from Broadway to Rock and Roll to Pop and Country. We also create personalized shows for private parties and corporate events. Essentially we can create a musical just for you by writing comedy to suit your occasion and adding your favorite music.
Our group consists of 5 incredibly versatile singers and a dynamic 4 piece band.
At the Music Box we’re selling pure entertainment steeped in nostalgia. Everyone who comes to our shows leaves happier. It’s a joy to watch people singing along and laughing. It feels like throwing a great party every weekend!
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
I think my husband Brad saw me as a leader before I did.
We met in a musical theater company and I thought that I would spend my life doing that. I enjoyed performing in musicals but it wasn’t really where my heart was.
When I was a kid I was obsessed with Saturday Night Live and always dreamed of writing and performing sketch comedy.
Also, I always preferred the freedom of singing all genres of music, not just Broadway.
Brad conceived a business where we could essentially scratch both those itches and be in charge of our own time, which would become imperative when we gave birth to our son 2 years later.
I never would’ve imagined running my own business but Brad always said, “If you’re going to bet on anyone, bet on yourself”.
And we’ve never looked back.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Unfortunately, Nothing and Nobody can hand you your happiness.
Fortunately, Nothing and Nobody can take it away.
We are not victims in this world.
We get to decide how we feel about our suffering.
Healing means losing the identity built on our pain.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I think my friends would say that laughter matters to me. Comedy is a core value in my house.
Being able to laugh at the world and yourself is imperative.
I don’t like people who take themselves too seriously.
You could tell me the most awful thing, but if you make it funny I won’t blame you for it.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
My favorite time of year is Christmas because we do a Beatles Holiday show where we mash up the music of the Beatles with the music of the season. We do some version of this theme every year, so over the years we’ve come up with so many beautiful arrangements that are delicious with Love and Nostalgia.
Our club only seats 100 people so the environment is intimate and the sound is impeccable.
When I am on stage with the people that I love:
(Our group consists of myself and my husband Brad, our friends Luke Wrobel, Kristina Sullivan, Cay Taylor and the band Austin Biel, Mark McCain, Art Gilligan and Long Le)
When I am singing these arrangements that we’ve created together for over a decade with these people that feel like family, and sharing it with 100 other people who love listening to it as much as we love doing it.
Its Magic.
That for me, is Peace.
