Life & Work with Marzy Lo of Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marzy Lo.

Marzy Lo

Hi Marzy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Born in Central Texas, raised in Houston, marzy lo is a multidisciplinary artist with particular interest in writing and music. I always showed an affinity towards singing and dancing as a toddler and began taking dance classes at age 2. As I grew older, my artistic interests grew with me; i wrote her first children’s book at the age of 7, and I wrote her first song by age 9. At age 11, I began classically training in flute and played in concert band until graduating high school. During my first year at Dartmouth College, I joined an a cappella group called “Music In Color” where I learned more about vocal arrangement, melodic improvisation, and musical direction. After getting my bachelor’s degree in film & media and African American studies, I moved back home to Houston and began navigating the professional world while also trying to start my music career. I started out on social media, stitching and duetting other producers/creators with my writing, and eventually found my way to working directly with producers and engineers in the Houston area. My first original EP titled “stellar” released on August 19th, 2024, and my upcoming single “Royalties” releases September 8th, 2025.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My artist development has been a slow process–a majority of the battle was finding the confidence to just get started. Since I’ve released my debut EP, I’ve struggled most in supporting my dream as an independent artist, finding resources to make the art up to standard that I expect for myself, and learning new things. I’m grateful for the support that I’ve found along the way from my family, friends, and colleagues that I’ve met through music.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a singer-songwriter, poet, and film extraordinaire. I specialize in music, building a world for myself to play around in sonically and visually. I weave my education throughout my work. I’m most proud of my authenticity, independence, and ability to bring a vision to life. What sets me apart from everyone else is my distinctive voice, not just the literal sound of it, but specifically my storytelling ability and sense of creative expression.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was on the stage a lot as a dancer. I liked to perform and impress others. I’ve always been bubbly and outspoken, but I had my shy moments as a child. My interests were all over the place – I loved challenging myself to find new things to learn about. I had a fascination with East Asian media (mainly anime, K-pop/K-dramas, and Japanese & South Korean pop culture) that led to me teaching myself (survival) Korean/Hangul in high school. I loved writing fiction stories, fan fiction, anyway that I could get lost in another world, I would. I grew up on the internet, with lots of influences coming from Tumblr and online flash games.
