Traci Duff shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Traci, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
My days begin with intention—water, prayer, and meditation, followed by movement, whether a nice walk or weight training. From there, I step into a full day at the salon behind the chair at Traci Duff Hair curating beauty and thoughtfully listening to 10–12 discerning clients. Between appointments, I focus on my latest venture, Matchmaker Houston, a private bespoke service designed to connect extraordinary people. I also oversee the marketing and retail for Duff’s Barbershop, the heritage barbershop I share with my brother Johnny, where timeless tradition meets modern refinement. Evenings are reserved for restoration—a scrumptious dinner with friends or a quiet evening walk to bring the day full circle.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’ve built my career around beauty, connection, and curation. At Traci Duff Hair a private appointment-only salon tucked into the heart of Montrose, I create a sanctuary where clients feel at ease and leave transformed. With my brother, I co-own Duff’s Barbershop, a gentleman’s grooming destination that honors old-school tradition while embracing modern refinement. My newest venture, Matchmaker Houston, is the most intimate expression of my work—bringing together discerning singles through bespoke, carefully curated introductions.
In the rare blend of worlds I move through: elevating style and confidence behind the chair, cultivating a sense of community in our barbershop, and crafting love stories with intention. My life is an interplay of artistry, hospitality, and human connection—all woven into a lifestyle that is both modern and timeless.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
What Breaks Bonds
Relationships fracture when trust is compromised, when communication diminishes, or when pride and defensiveness take the place of empathy. Neglect—whether emotional or practical—creates distance, and over time, that distance can harden into disconnection.
⸻
What Restores Bonds
They are strengthened again through consistent communication, accountability, and a willingness to be vulnerable. Forgiveness and patience allow space for repair, while steady actions—not just words—rebuild trust. Ultimately, bonds are restored when both people commit to showing up with intention and care.
⸻
In essence: Bonds break through neglect and disconnection; they are restored through trust, communication, and intentional effort.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Early in my hairdressing career, I worried the work might be too superficial, not meaningful enough and I should do something different. But over time, I came to see just how profound it truly is. Hair is never just hair—it’s a gateway to connection. Behind the chair, people let their guard down. They share their stories, their struggles, their celebrations. I realized I wasn’t just styling hair; I was holding space, listening, and becoming part of their lives in an intimate, unique way.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
By mistaking digital noise for real connection. We live in a world of endless screens, swipes, and curated feeds, yet many are losing touch with the power of being fully present with another person in real time. True connection doesn’t happen in algorithms; it happens face-to-face, heart-to-heart
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I prioritize self-care—centering myself through prayer, meditation, and movement. I also find peace in living fully in the present moment, appreciating life as it unfolds. From that grounded place, I’m able to be truly present with each person I encounter, offering not just my skills, but my full attention and connection.
