Story & Lesson Highlights with Justice Payne-Tyson of Northside Houston

We recently had the chance to connect with Justice Payne-Tyson and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Justice, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
Lol, fun question. I’d hire me because I bring both heart and hustle to the work. I don’t pretend to have all the answers, but I show up with honesty and care, and that’s the kind of therapist I’d want in my corner.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Justice Payne Tyson. By day, I am a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor, and by night, I am a real estate investor and developer. I am the proud founder of All Us We Counseling in Houston, Texas, and The Neighborhood Counseling Foundation in Paterson, New Jersey. I also created Auto Therapy®, a form of therapy designed for people who want to be in motion, and I have built a phenomenal team of authentic therapists who are committed to making mental health more authentic, relatable, and impactful. At the core of everything I do is the belief that therapy does not have to be stiff or disconnected; it can be powerful, authentic, and truly transformative.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
This isn’t a one-person answer. My mother is the hardest worker I know. I’ve watched her grind for as long as I can remember, never complaining, and everywhere she went, she elevated the organization. Her father, before her, was often the first and only Black male nurse in the hospitals where he worked, earning many awards. My father turned his life around from being incarcerated to creating and running a multimillion-dollar business. His father, before him, was a World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War veteran who still made time for his children while working in a dynamite factory. And I haven’t even spoken about my uncles and aunts. When I say there isn’t just one person who taught me about work, I mean it. I come from a legacy

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You can’t fit in when you were born to stand out. It’s okay to be unique and take up space.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
I stopped code-switching in 2019. I’ll never go back. In short, the public version is the same as private me… the real me.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
You’d have to ask them. That’s not for me to say. I pray that they can feel that it’s deeper than therapy with me. I just want my people to elevate.
