Story & Lesson Highlights with Billy Deion Nelson of Southwest Alief, Texas

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Billy Deion Nelson. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Billy Deion, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Right now, my days are a mix of structure and hustle. I usually start the morning with some light stretching and a good breakfast to fuel my day. From there, I dive into work checking in on my business (UndergroundHTX), responding to messages, confirming bookings, and making sure everything’s running smooth.

Throughout the day, I’m juggling multiple hats by creating content, packing orders, brainstorming new product ideas, and building up my personal brand. I also carve out time for movement, whether it’s hitting the gym or going for a walk to stay energized. In between, I’m working on passion projects or connecting with people who inspire me.

Every day isn’t perfect, but I’m intentional about how I move. My focus right now is alignment mentally, spiritually, and professionally.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Billy D. Nelson. I’m a creative entrepreneur and content creator based in Houston. I founded UndergroundHTX, an event space that has become a trusted hub for local creators, small businesses, and community members to bring their ideas to life. Whether it’s birthday parties, gatherings, meetings, toy drives, or back-to-school events, we’ve hosted hundreds of occasions where people can come together, create, and feel proud of what they accomplish.

In 2020, I started Protekt Your Krown, a natural hair care brand created for all hair types. Our products are designed to promote healthy growth, confidence, and self-care from the inside out. Building this brand has been a rewarding journey of creating quality, inclusive products that empower people to embrace and protect their natural hair.

Recently, I’ve started designing shirts and apparel to represent my brands and creatively promote UndergroundHTX. I’m always seeking new ways to connect with people and bring ideas to life whether through events, products, or authentic, inspiring content.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
The relationship that has shaped how I see myself the most is the one I have with my own mindset and self-discipline. Early on, I realized that no matter the external circumstances, how I show up for myself the thoughts I allow, the goals I set, and the consistency I maintain defines who I am.

That internal relationship taught me to take ownership of my growth, both personally and professionally. It’s pushed me to stay focused through challenges and celebrate the small wins. Building that strong connection with myself has given me confidence, clarity, and the drive to keep leveling up every day.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’d tell my younger self, “You’re doing better than you think.” There were so many moments I felt like I wasn’t moving fast enough or questioned if I was on the right path. But looking back, every step even the ones that felt like setbacks, were preparing me for where I’m at now.

I’d remind him that it’s okay not to have it all figured out. Growth takes time, and you don’t have to rush the process. Trust your instincts, stay grounded, and keep showing up, it’s all going to come together.

Today, I’m more focused on patience, consistency, discipline, spending time with loved ones, and getting closer to God. If I could go back, I’d let him know that peace comes from within and it’s built one intentional day at a time.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Authenticity. In everything I do. Whether it’s business, content, or personal relationships I protect the value of showing up as my true self. I believe that staying real, even when it’s not the most popular or polished route, is what builds trust, connection, and long-term impact.

In a world that constantly pushes people to fit a certain mold, I make it a point to lead with honesty, integrity, and a sense of purpose. I don’t fake the wins, and I don’t hide the losses. I’ve found that being authentic not only keeps me grounded, but also inspires others to do the same.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m with my family. I’m very family-oriented, and being around them brings me a sense of comfort, love, and grounding that nothing else can. No matter what’s going on in the world or in my work, just being with my loved ones reminds me of what really matters.

Without my family, I don’t have anything. They’re my foundation, my biggest support system, and the reason I keep going. That time with them recharges me and keeps me focused on the bigger picture building something that not only honors them, but creates a legacy we can all be proud of.
