We recently had the chance to connect with Karissa Hubbard and have shared our conversation below.
Karissa, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I truly enjoy trying to food places. I honestly don’t eat a lot but I do like to try new places with new food choices.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am an educator, coach, internationally-certified Christian counselor, inspirational speaker, and author of The Popular Girl series. I dedicated to uplifting young people through sports and my books. I try to empower, encourage and equip the next generation to be leaders of the future. I combines my love for storytelling with my faith, striving to live each day in a way that glorifies God. I am currently working on my fourth book. I earned a spot as a local finalist for 2024 Remarkable Woman of the Year by CW30 and Nexstar Media, as well as a Women of Influence award by Cypress Lifestyle Magazine.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
When I was in elementary school, I would bring the movie “Our friend Martin” because my school didn’t have anything planned for Martin Luther King Jr. Day and I felt it was important for all students to see it and learn about him. I brought it like three years straight.
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
Growing up, I would always get physically sick on the first day of school and test day. It continued until my adult life and I wouldn’t learn until I was 25 all these years I had anxiety. I was trying to learn how to navigate my new diagnosis and life and I had a Church “friend” out it to a group of people and I felt embarrassed. However, my therapist taught me that once I take ownership of my story and tell it myself no one can tell it for me and I began to share my story to encourage other people who may be going through the same thing as me.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My friends would say that support really matters to me. They know I will show up for them and support them in every way. I am the friend that wants to see everyone win and help anyway I can. And in return just wanted to be supported as well.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people tell how loving and kind I was and how I smiled everyday even when things were hard. I hope they tell how through tough times and sickness I never gave up and always fought through. I hope they tell how much of an impact I made on the world and how awesome of a writer I was and I changed lives for the better.
