An Inspired Chat with Steve Smith of Jersey Village

Steve Smith shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Steve, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
On work days the first thing I do is get up early to make sure the weather is okay. With the weather as turbulent as it is, we want to make sure we’re not putting our crew or anyone’s home at risk. If the weather’s okay, I get up and love on my dogs for a bit before letting them outside to handle their business. After they’re all back inside, I deliver breakfast to our feral cat population that we share our yard with. Once they’ve been fed, I call our project manager and make sure everything is going smoothly on the job. Depending on how things are going or what I have planned for the day, I either start working on my list for the day or get in a morning workout. Some days one of those items can take up the whole 90 minutes but I typically am able to knock a few of them off the list within that timeframe.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Steve Smith with Blue Ribbon Roofing. We are a residential roofing company that has serviced the Greater Houston Community since 2010. I would say our service based approach is what makes us unique. We treat every home as if it were on which means we take the extra time when planning the project to make sure that the proper ventilation is installed and the home is protected during construction. We feel this extra care is important to create a better experience for the homeowner and also help extend the life of the roof.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
Most definitely my father. He had an incredible work ethic and sense of responsibility. He not only taught by the example he set in getting up to go to work every day, but he very strongly encouraged me to get jobs at an early age whether it was a paper route, mowing grass or shoveling snow. Sometimes you don’t appreciate the lessons you learn in the moment, and there were definitely times that I wasn’t enamored with the idea of working when I was young, but I credit both my work ethic and sense of responsibility to my father and I’m forever grateful for that.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
To enjoy the good times and recognize and relish them while you’re going through them. Life is shorter than you think. It’s not always going to be easy. Appreciate what you have and those you have it with but don’t stop striving to improve your situation.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
My late father. His unwavering view of doing what’s right was inspirational for me. He taught me many lessons that still resonate to this day and has given me an ideal that I work tirelessly to achieve.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope that people say that I was honest and treated people right.
