Story & Lesson Highlights with Matt Harpalani of Upper Kirby

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Matt Harpalani. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Matt, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I begin each day with coffee and a long walk—two rituals that fuel both clarity and focus. The walk has become an important part of my routine, giving me space to reset, plan, and approach the day with intention.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Matt Harpalani, a custom clothier based in Houston, TX. My family has been in the clothing industry for generations, and I began my own career in 2006 in New York City before expanding to my hometown of Houston in 2016. I specialize in designing custom menswear—including formalwear, suits, outerwear, and dress shirts. In addition to operating showrooms in both Houston and New York, I also travel nationwide to meet clients exclusively for their clothing needs.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
My father’s influence was pivotal in my journey. He not only introduced me to the world of custom clothing but also instilled in me the values of perseverance and hard work—principles that I carry into every garment I design

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
I’ve come to see suffering as an opportunity for growth. Every setback provides a lesson in what to avoid, while each correction reminds me to remain humble and focused as I move forward

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
My wife has been one of my greatest influences. Her encouragement to take risks and her ability to see my vision from another angle continually inspires me to move forward with confidence

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
If I knew I had only 10 years left, I would scale back on work and focus on what matters most—cherishing time with my family and being present with friends
