Today we’d like to introduce you to Brock Shepard.
Hi Brock, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Since I was 8 my life was developed around what I do. My father started his engineering company the day I was born. I walked projects with him starting around 8 years old, and never looked back. I took a college drafting coarse at 14 so that I could start drafting at 15. When I graduated college I moved from drafting to engineering while I worked on my masters. The day I got the message that I passed my licensing exam, I moved over to business development. In 2023 I started my own engineering company with two business partners. I worked a few other jobs in high school, but l was always interested in following in my father’s footsteps. So he and I set down and put a plan together for my education and career moving forward. For the most part I have stuck to that plan.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Of course not. Anytime you have a business you have your ups and downs. The economy is a big factor. The saying “If it were easy everyone would do it” is very true. I am also a firm believer if everything is easy, then you don’t appreciate it. We grow from the hard times.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My job description is a little undefined. As owner/CEO, I am responsible for everything that happens within the office. My main goal is to bring in sales. This means talking with clients as well as traveling to their offices. We design everything from homes to Highrise buildings. I work with and understand all aspects of construction, but my specialty is wood and steel design. I have been able to work on some really interesting projects in my career. One of my more interesting projects was a 2-story office building that was fully constructed in the back of the client’s property. It was fully furnished and then moved a quarter of a mile and dropped into a 13 foot hole. Once the move was complete the building was up and operational in less than 2 weeks. The building is 150′ x 150′ and slopes outward each level. The purpose of the project was a marketing tool for a heavy industrial lift company and if it was to be built in place it would have disrupted their operations for 15 months. It was very interesting being able to walk under a 2 story building as it is moving above you. Everyone says they go the extra mile, but we do. We have clients that have worked with us for years because we don’t run from our mistakes. We get involved to solve the issue and keep the project moving forward. We are also not stagnant in our way of thinking. Our industry is slow to change, but we are always pushing the limit to find a better more cost effective way of constructing a building.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I have always been an outgoing person. talking with strangers is not an issue for me. This helps for sales. So, I have found that just being myself and loving what I do, has helped me to be successful. I also have two great business partners that help.
