We recently had the chance to connect with Sarah Hood and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
Most certainly walking a path and taking moments to stop and appreciate the little things along the way.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! I’m Sarah Hood, owner of Read Frog Dyslexia & Educational Services. I have been in education for over 20 years. Prior to teaching in the public-school system, I worked as a Cognitive Therapist for individuals with traumatic brain injury. Throughout my entire professional career, I have devoted my energies and time to helping others learn in different, multi-sensory, and cognitively efficient ways.
My passion to gain a robust understanding of the educational process and become a partner in students’ learning, prompted me to gain National Accreditation as a Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT) and a Nationally Certified Educational Diagnostician (NCED) in addition to the Texas qualification as a Licensed Dyslexia Therapist (LDT). Equipped with an arsenal of knowledge and experience, I was determined to create a company that allowed individuals with reading, writing, and spelling difficulties to become empowered and able readers. A company that would take the time to encourage, celebrate, and foster essential skills for a lifetime of reading success.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My earliest memories are rooted in education. Recollections from my early childhood include day after day of setting up a “classroom” of stuffed animals and teaching them to read. I recall often telling each of my “students” that they would be so smart when they “grew up” as I helped them to complete their worksheets and homework. My mother, who was an early childhood teacher, always had a cache of books and teacher supplies. Her passion for education was most certainly imprinted on me; she was never one to back down from a learning opportunity, even if it was just for dolls and stuffies.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, it would be to slow down; there’s no rush; enjoy the days of learning, living and growing.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
It would be hard to name just one, but there have been many of my students over the years who have overwhelmed me with the quality of their character. Their goodness, work ethic, the ability to persevere through hard things is inspirational and admirable.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace around my family and with my friends. Social by design, loyal by nature, I feel I’m at my best around people; conversing, sharing, listening and laughing.
