Story & Lesson Highlights with Ram Perez III of Private studio

We recently had the chance to connect with Ram Perez III and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Ram, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Competitive shooting! I took home first place in my last competition and I really enjoy weapons training. Lots of fun!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Ram Perez III and I am an artist. My main discipline is Tattoo but I also love to do sculpture, paint and play music. Just working my way to becoming a polymath.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
My first time seeing the grand canyon. I was about 15 or so. I was on a family vacation and we had been driving all day to get to this lodge. We got there just as the sun had gone down completely. We thought we had missed the opportunity to see it that day so we were all quite disappointed. I walked over to the canyon edge and looked in and to my surprise, it was still daylight in the canyon. It was like watching day and night all at once and it completely changed the way I draw light. It was the single biggest influence on my art and has been ever since. It challenged my comprehension of color and I’ve been chasing the glow of it to this day.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
From a very early age. I was about 14 or so and I remember letting a friend borrow my drawing book. She took it home where her parents found all my disturbing drawings. She was told she couldn’t hangout with me anymore lol and I remember not being angry about it but, kind of accomplished. My art was drawing in very strong feelings and from then on thats all I wanted to do. I felt very powerful from that day on.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Oh man..where to begin. Firstly, that a tattoo can’t be good if it wasn’t done at the shop they work at. It’s 2025. Can we please stop this practice? There’s no need to downplay a great tattoo because it didn’t come from you or your shop. It’s giving fragile ego and it’s not cute. Just the whole hater mentality in general. We should be lifting each other up as an industry. Not fighting each other over what exactly? It’s not like we’re going to run out of skin. There are 8 billion people in the world. Get over yourselves.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Id stop following rules and start robbing banks.
