Story & Lesson Highlights with Charles Washington II of DownTown, 3rd Ward ,

We recently had the chance to connect with Charles Washington II and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Charles, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Creating is one of the things that I get lost in. I was born to build, innovate and make all the things ive imaged into reality.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Charles L. Washington II, I am a Father, DJ / Producer (DJ CHARLEE BROWN\ CHUCK LEE) Venue owner (The Pop Up Place) , Curator of sound with the intention of creating harmony ,unity, understanding and facilitating love through music. I am an entrepreneur at heart for the since of independence and through this I am able to help other. I am the creator of The Vibes HTX ( DJ Collective) A collective of DJ/Producers/Artist , What’s The 411 (Curated Events and Media) What’s The 411 is at its core a long running weekly experience feat HipHop & R&B (Deep Cuts and Classics) feat in Midtown at Reset. The Pop Up Place (Venue/ Rental Property) , an outdoor Venue located in 3rd ward across from Peggy Park has been restored to become an outdoor event space for the community featuring live music , DJs, local vendors and more.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
The person that taught me the most about work would absolutely be my older sister. When she first got her job I seen how she worked for everything and was very consistent in her work ethic. Her ability to take care of her family and show up everyday at 100 defiantly inspires me till this day and moment. This stuck with me as an entrepreneur and through out my life.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
Some defining wounds in my life would be the death of a my family members and friends through violence , suicide and natural causes along with taking care of my mother as she battles dementia. I have worked through this by intentionally being an advocate for mental and physical health and living a lifestyle of peace and mindfulness while working to uplifting others, this has been the best therapy. The healing process is continuous.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
When the intention is rooted in growth and uplifting those involved in any capacity, it is to be valued as something. timeless

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
Something that I deeply understand and respect is the power of music and its effect on its listeners on a cellular and ultimately an emotional, phycological, and physical level. Understanding the power to build or destroy through vibrations is a responsibility of the sound selector even if they accept these terms or not its still a reality if the selector chooses to acknowledge it or not, but most are not aware of any of this power music hold because it will make them accoutable for what vibrations they are transmitting out.
