We recently had the chance to connect with Kimberley Wells-Holmes and have shared our conversation below.
Kimberley , so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What are you chasing, and what would happen if you stopped?
I am chasing purpose and impact. For me, it’s not just about building a business or achieving personal goals—it’s about creating something that feeds others, whether that’s through food, encouragement, or service. I’m chasing the vision of leaving a lasting imprint that inspires people to believe in themselves and know that they can overcome.
If I stopped, I believe a part of me would feel unfulfilled, because this isn’t just work—it’s my calling. Stopping would mean silencing the very thing that fuels me daily. And while rest and reflection are necessary, giving up completely would mean someone might miss the encouragement, the meal, or the message they needed from me. That’s why I keep going
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Chef Kimberley Wells-Holmes, and I am the owner of A Taste of Suga, a catering and private/personal chef service that brings southern homestyle cooking to life with love and creativity. What makes my brand unique is that it’s not just about food—it’s about creating experiences that feel like home. Every dish is prepared with intention, carrying the flavors and traditions I grew up with, but also infused with fresh inspiration to fit today’s lifestyles.
Right now, I’m excited about expanding A Taste of Suga into new areas like meal prep and private/personal chef services for families, seniors, and communities in need. For me, it’s all about purpose—feeding people, body and soul, while building a legacy that inspires others to pursue their own gifts.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
The relationship that most shaped how I see myself is my relationship with God. Through every season of my life—highs, lows, triumphs, and trials—God has shown me who I truly am and what I’m capable of. That foundation has given me strength, direction, and the confidence to walk in my purpose.
Equally important is the relationship I had with my mother, affectionately known as Suga. She was the heart of our family and the inspiration behind my brand, A Taste of Suga. Watching her cook, nurture, and love people through food taught me the value of serving others with both excellence and compassion. Her legacy lives on in everything I do, and she continues to shape how I see myself—not just as a chef, but as a woman carrying forward her spirit of love.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, there was a time I almost gave up. Life has a way of throwing unexpected challenges, and there were seasons when the weight of responsibilities, setbacks, and disappointments made me question if I was on the right path. I remember moments where the vision felt too big, and the resources felt too small.
But what kept me from giving up was my faith, my family, and the reminder of why I started. I realized that giving up would mean letting go of not only my dream but also the legacy I’m building in honor of my mother, Suga. I chose to keep going, even when it wasn’t easy, because I know someone is waiting on the very thing God placed inside of me. Quitting simply isn’t an option—because the world has to experience A Taste of Suga.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies the food and catering industry tells itself is that success is purely about trends, profits, or speed. Many believe that if you’re not constantly chasing the next viral dish or cutting corners to increase margins, you won’t make it. But the truth is, longevity and impact come from authenticity, consistency, and care.
Another misconception is that creativity and quality have to take a backseat to efficiency or trends. While speed and innovation are important, I’ve learned that the heart of this business is consistency, authenticity, and creating experiences that leave people feeling cared for. At A Taste of Suga, we refuse to compromise on flavor, love, or the personal touch, because that’s what keeps our guests coming back.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people remember me as someone who served with love, purpose, and authenticity. I want the story they tell to reflect that I poured my heart into everything I did—whether it was feeding someone a meal that brought comfort, encouraging someone to believe in themselves, or leaving a legacy rooted in faith and family.
I want them to say that I inspired others to chase their dreams without compromise, that I honored my mother, Suga, through my work, and that I made the world a little sweeter, one dish, one word, and one act of kindness at a time.
