Today we’d like to introduce you to Tonna Cooney.
Hi Tonna, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I attended my first antique show in Round Top, Texas in 1998 and was instantly hooked. From then on, I spent weekends at garage sales, estate sales, and auctions looking for unique, one-of-a-kind items to decorate my home, often with my four kids in tow. Before long, I decided to start selling my finds on eBay – and that’s where my obsession turned into something bigger. Fast forward to 2020, I opened my first shop on Etsy and just this past July, I took the leap into a 3,000 sq. ft. warehouse. What started out as curiosity turned into obsession, and eventually into my style that’s Tangerine Home.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Ha! It has definitely not been a smooth road! Raising my kids always came first, but now that they’re grown I’ve been able to pour my energy back into my business. Every detour has shaped my eye and my style, and now Tangerine Home is the result of years of passion, patience, and persistence.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I curate and sell one-of-a-kind vintage and antique furniture and decor, specializing in the preppy meets punk aesthetic. I look for pieces with attitude and soul, finds that clash and collide in the best way.
I’m known for my “eye” and the way I mix decades (even centuries) and styles into something unexpected. I’m also known as a bit of a rebel and rule breaker.
I’m most proud of building a business that feels authentic. From my first listing on eBay to my 3,000 sq. ft. warehouse today. I’ve created a brand that’s not only about design, but about encouraging people to break rules, own their style, and make their homes as bold as they are. Where most antique shops stick to tradition, I mix tradition with rebellion. Instead of feeling like a history museum, I sell attitude and individuality. That’s why one of our tag lines is, “Not your grandmother’s furniture, unless she was in a band.”
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
My mix-and-clash style of decorating doesn’t just come from furniture. I’m inspired by music, fashion, art and subcultures which give my style its edge.
