Today we’d like to introduce you to Colin Schickedanz.
Hi Colin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I worked in finance for over 10 years and as I started to get burnt out, I wanted to find a side hustle and focus on my entrepreneur skills. I had heard about friends buying businesses that were already existing and so I found a fun unique tour business for sale in Galveston and purchased it earlier this year. It has been a wonderful experience to manage employees try to grow the business and focusing on community involvement.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It is not always a smooth road, but what road is? There are constant hurdles that come up from disgruntled customers, sometimes unhappy employees, healthy competition, and also lots of administrative tasks that you have to tend to despite it not being in your best laid plans.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Galveston is the most haunted city in America for the main reason of the 1900 storm when 8 to 10,000 people died in one night. This is the largest natural disaster in American history. So Galveston has plenty of stories and historical buildings that still has many of these spirits today. Our tour company offers six unique tours running every day that focus on a different area of Galveston or a topic related to the history and the spirits that make it so entertaining. We are locally owned and operated company and run the most tours on land every single day.
I am most proud that we can entertain visitors to Galveston and share some of the rich history that this amazing city holds. We have a wonderful staff that loves their job and it shows through their passion when they give tours. Seeing the five star reviews come in because of the tour guide, the Galveston history, and the family, friendly entertainment makes this a really enjoyable business to work in, come down to the island and check out any of our tours every single day.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I really enjoy receiving Tim Ferriss’ weekly emails, listening to the How I Built This podcast, and reading plenty of small business books. I’ve recently been enjoying the Gratitude app to journal what I am happy for and what makes me smile every single day.
