Conversations with Arnita Pitts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Arnita Pitts.

Hi Arnita, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I come from 3 generations of bakers. I would bake for my friends’ birthdays and various events. I always came with whatever their favorite baked good was. Then one day, a good friend of mine asked me to bake her birthday cake, and she would pay me. I had heard that you should get paid for doing something you love, and bingo, I thought, ‘Wow, I can get paid to do this.’ So, that’s when I decided to start my business in 2022. My son was the most excited. I had been telling myself for years to do it.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, the road has not been smooth. Starting a home business from scratch, I wasn’t sure where to begin. I’ve learned a lot along the way. I got a lot of advice and direction. I hired a business coach who helped me determine the direction I need to take. I attended seminars and various events, and I continue to build relationships by supporting other small business owners.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a retired safety professional with 32 years of experience. I have worked in the transportation industry for many years. And I retired from the City of Houston after 21 years in January 2024. I was known for my passion to keep our employees safe. Wanting them to go home the same way they came to work. I am proud of the many professional certifications I have achieved. What has set me apart from others is that I am genuine and authentic, and I treat people with respect and dignity.

What’s next?
My plans have changed dramatically since the death of my son in April 2024. He was my biggest fan, supporter, and assistant. We would travel to various farmers’ markets around the city. Since then, I have been asking God to give me a new direction for my business. I didn’t want to continue to be “in these streets” going to markets. So, the goal and plan for 2026 is to open a Micro bakery and operate it from my home. I have also been given an opportunity to put my baked goods in a couple of coffee shops.
