Exploring Life & Business with Teneka Winton of Earthside Beginning Postpartum Doula Service

Today we’d like to introduce you to Teneka Winton.

Teneka, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey into postpartum doula care and newborn support began with a deep, personal recognition: families deserve more compassionate, comprehensive care during one of the most vulnerable and transformative times of their lives.

Becoming a mother changed everything for me. I experienced firsthand the emotional intensity, physical exhaustion, and identity shift that come with bringing a new life into the world. What stood out most was how much support families don’t receive after the baby arrives. That realization sparked a calling in me—to become the support system I wished every family had.

From that desire, Earthside Beginning Postpartum Doula Service was born.

I started small, working directly with families to provide hands-on, heart-centered support in the postpartum period. I helped new mothers rest and recover, guided parents in newborn care, and offered a calm, nurturing presence when everything felt overwhelming. As I served more families, I pursued certifications, advanced trainings, and immersed myself in evidence-based practices to ensure that my care was not only compassionate, but also grounded in the highest standards.

I soon recognized a broader need—not just for postpartum support, but for emergency preparedness as well. That’s when I added infant and child CPR training to my offerings, empowering parents and caregivers with life-saving skills that provide peace of mind.

Over time, what started as a solo effort grew into a trusted, professional service rooted in empathy, education, and empowerment. Earthside Beginning Postpartum Doula Service now supports families throughout the Greater Houston area with postpartum doula care, overnight newborn care, maternal rest support, and CPR training—all designed to restore confidence and calm to the fourth trimester and beyond.

Today, I’m proud that Earthside Beginning Postpartum Doula Service is not just a service—it’s a movement to change the way we support families. Every visit, every class, every conversation is a step toward redefining postpartum care—making it more nurturing, more knowledgeable, and more human.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey has been meaningful—but far from smooth. Like many entrepreneurs in caregiving professions, I’ve had to navigate both personal and professional challenges while building something from the ground up.

One of the earliest struggles was wearing all the hats. As a solo provider, I was not only supporting clients and their babies—I was also managing marketing, scheduling, contracts, finances, and everything in between. Balancing the deep emotional presence required for postpartum care with the demands of running a business was a steep learning curve.

There were also seasons of uncertainty—especially in the beginning—when I questioned whether families would find value in this kind of support, or whether the community fully understood the role of a postpartum doula. It took time, education, and relationship-building to earn that trust and to clarify what Earthside Beginnings stood for.

Another challenge was emotional sustainability. Postpartum work is heart-centered and deeply intimate. Learning how to set healthy boundaries, protect my own energy, and avoid burnout was essential—not just for my own wellbeing, but so I could show up fully for the families I serve.

But through those challenges, I found strength and clarity. I built systems to streamline the business side, sought mentorship, invested in ongoing education, and developed a clear service structure that supports both my clients and my capacity. Today, I’m grateful for those obstacles because they helped shape Earthside Beginning Postpartum Doula Service into a business that’s not only sustainable—but deeply rooted in integrity, compassion, and professionalism.
