Today we’d like to introduce you to Lacy Isenburg.
Lacy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey to becoming a Sexual Health coach has been long and interesting. I have a BFA in Theatre from Sam Houston State University. During my last year I took a course in Human Sexuality that blew my mind! It astounded me that I was in a place where sex was talked about so openly without judgment. I always wondered why no one ever talked about something that literally every species on Earth does! It was exciting and liberating!
I ended up teaching theatre for a few years and then bounced around from different temp jobs for a while. I eventually found myself in a pretty deep depression and feeling directionless and purposeless. My depression had gotten so bad that one day I came home and when I closed the garage door behind me, I just didn’t want to turn the car off. I then pictured my dad finding me and I realized that I couldn’t take away his only child. So, if that was off the table, I knew I had to do something to get back into my life. I checked into a hospital, found a great psychiatrist and therapist and eventually made my way back to school.
I remembered liking psychology in high school, so I got my masters degree from the University of Houston Clear Lake in counseling and started my journey to become a therapist myself. Once I finally made it, I remembered the human sexuality class I took eons ago and took the steps to become a Certified Sex Therapist. I eventually opened my own practice. After practicing for a few years, I wanted to make another shift and I got certified as a life coach. I am now practicing as a Sexual Health Coach and it still astounds me that sex is still such a taboo topic, which I think is a big draw for me.
Now, I have my coaching practice where I coach individuals and couples through intimacy and other sex related issues and it has allowed me to embrace a lot more freedom in my life and career. I also love to educate others on sexual health to keep the conversation going.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been anything BUT a smooth road. When I earned my BFA, I really thought I knew exactly what I wanted to do that would make me happy. Then, the real world slapped me right across the face and jolted me into reality. Teaching theatre was not what I thought or hoped it would be. I was dealing with a lot of things that had nothing to do with theatre or the students that I really didn’t care for and that made the actual teaching a lot less enjoyable, and in fact, a lot more stressful. It was really tough to realize that I was so wrong about what was going to work for me. There was a lot of disillusionment for me and it took years for me to figure out the right path. I worked several temp jobs until one finally hired me on permanently. I was making barely enough to survive, but I had a steady paycheck and benefits. That job had me in front of 2 monitors in a quiet cubicle where I didn’t speak to anyone all day. Everyday. My job consisted of emails and excel spreadsheets. My extroverted, creative, social self began to die to the point where I was driving to and from work in tears everyday. Even when I finally did find my right path, it still wasn’t easy, nor is it still. School is hard at any age and starting your masters degree at 35 was not the same as getting my BFA in my 20’s. I’ve struggled with relationships, friendships, internships, and all the other “ships” in life. Not to mention the struggle of making big life changes and starting your own business.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about L’emental Coaching?
L’emental Coaching (pronounced ‘elemental’) is my practice where I focus on Sexual Health coaching. I wanted to encompass all that human sexuality is and not just the physical act of it. With my sexual health coaching, I really aim to help people fully embrace their bodies and all it can do for them. I called it L’emental because we are elements of the earth we live on. We are made up of the same matter that everything we touch is. Our sexuality, sexual identity, gender, etc., are huge pieces of our identity and informs so much of how we show up in the world. It informs how we dress, how we communicate, how we relate to others and so much more. Sex and sexuality are just as organic to humans as growing food in the ground, falling rain, volcanic fires, and wind blowing. So, why is there still so much shame, stigma, and judgment surrounding it?
I am most proud of helping others be proud of and celebrate the body they are in and enjoy all the pleasures the body can bring. I coach individuals in being more present in their bodies, how to listen to body cues, how to build arousal and desire naturally using the senses, and how to be unapologetically genuine in who they are and who they want to be. I value and celebrate diversity and love seeing people be confident in their true selves! I coach couples to be more in tune with each other, how to communicate more effectively, and how to negotiate and communicate boundaries in and out of the bedroom. I also teach workshops on all sorts of topics ranging from Perimenopause to kink and BDSM and everything in between.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
I am an only child and growing up, every birthday, every Easter, and every Christmas, my mother would get up super early and set up “Santa” or the “Easter Bunny” or birthday stuff for me in the kitchen or living room so that I would wake up to the surprise. She would always make things magical for me. She did this every year up to her death when I was 26. Yes, I had “Santa” put out for me at 25! I do remember one Christmas when I was about 8, my parents and I went to the movies on Christmas Eve and when we came home that night, the front door was ajar, the refrigerator door was open, the pitcher of iced tea was on the counter and a bag of chips was open and kind of scattered. In the living room was all my Christmas stuff including a new bike. They both played it up that Santa had come while we were at the movies and they had a neighbor come in and leave the clues. My mom always wanted me to keep the wonder alive!
