Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Perry.
Hi Justin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I think every therapist starts out trying to find healing for themselves. When I discovered family systems theory everything clicked. I originally was pursuing the Catholic priesthood, but God had other plans. Now, as a therapist, I have made relationships central to my work because God is love. This fact is what clicked for me and why I am so passionate about what I do. The relationships in our lives affect us more than we know. I help people heal those relationships whether they are partners, parents, or children.
I currently am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist at Stokan & Associates in Katy, TX. I have three kids and a wonderful wife. In addition to couples therapy and family therapy, I also am EMDR trained which allows me to work with those who want healing from trauma.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has been filled with highs and lows. I think the biggest struggle has been staying authentic to what drew me to become a therapist in the first place. The culture we live in is individual focused, and it sees therapy through this lens. Mental health is not limited to individuals, however. Who we are is heavily influenced by our family whether we are a child with behavioral issues or an adult with depression. Under this pressure, there have been many times I have betrayed who I am out of fear. It has taken a lot of personal growth to be comfortable with who I am and be true to what I believe people truly long for. Therapy is a powerful relationship that affects everyone involved; I am always growing alongside my clients.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in helping people who want healing and love in the relationships that matter most. I do this most often through couples therapy and family therapy. However, I love helping individuals as well. What sets me apart from other therapists is my integrity. I would rather lose a client (and the money from seeing them) than offer services they do not need. Many people come in asking for a Band-Aid when they need open heart surgery. Band-Aid approaches often make you feel better, however, it creates a dependence on therapy to maintain this. I want people to truly heal, and not need me forever. I care enough to push people towards difficult healing.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I always love to meet other therapists and get to know them. If you are a pastor, family doctor, pediatrician, etc. I would love to be a resource for your patients/ congregants.
