Meet Elizabeth Roehl of Sunshine Counseling Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Roehl.

Hi Elizabeth, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
After being laid off from a job as an analyst at Enron Corporation early in my career in December 2001, I began substitute teaching and fell in love with teaching elementary aged kids. I was an elementary special education teacher and school counselor in public schools for 20 years. While I was a school counselor I began pursuing my LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor) license in Texas. I decided to open a private counseling practice in 2023 where primarily see kids and teenagers ages 4 – 17. The name of my practice is Sunshine Counseling Services. I have a passion for working with kids and helping them achieve their fullest potential academically, socially, and emotionally. I hold a BA from Trinity University, a M.Ed. from University of Houston, and a MS in Counseling from University of Houston Clear Lake.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Overall achieving my goal of becoming a counselor has been smooth. However, I put in many hours of hard work, dedication, late nights, and internships to achieve this goal. I also had to learn about opening and running a small business, which has been a fun journey over the last few years.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
A Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas, I own a private mental health counseling business, Sunshine Counseling Services, PLLC that I opened in Fall 2023. I work with children ages 4 – 17 on strategies to manage anger, anxiety, emotional regulation, ADHD, and also teach social skills to children on the autism spectrum. I have over 2o years of experience working with children as an educator and counselor, and am also currently pursuing my play therapy certification to become a Registered Play Therapist.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I am a native Houstonian! I love the diversity of the city of Houston and the many cultures that make up the population of the city. I also love the access to world class medical care, shopping, and a variety of amazing restaurants that are in Houston.
