Today we’d like to introduce you to Carla Poli.
Carla, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Originally born and raised in Jamaica. I visited a couple who had quickly became not just friends, but family over the years who introduced me to ballroom dancing. Over a period of time and visits, the opportunity to become a Ballroom instructor presented itself. After almost 2 years of doing so, I was a two Time US champion within that Ballroom franchise circuit.
Ballroom was awesome! However, after dancing since I was three years old (no formal training), having chronic acne skin, a bad wax experience and seemingly no voice, I decided to embark on my esthetic journey. I then applied for the Aveda Institute Houston and got accepted! Before completing my esthetic program, I was offered a full paid scholarship to become a master educator at the Aveda Institute Houston. Teaching was a dream, however, I missed being in the treatment room and the performing facial treatment experience. I decided after almost 3 years of teaching, that I wanted to experience the industry hands-on. The next decade turned into exploring many different spa environments, from franchises to retreat type spas to medical spas and much more. Everything has led me back full circle to where I am now at PelleSana Med Spa working with one of the most amazing, dedicated and driven estheticians that I’ve known over 14 years and had the pleasure of educating myself.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. I have endured many obstacles and challenges which have made me into the person that I am today. Leaving my beautiful home country Jamaica and family was not easy. However, as my late mother would say in Patois, “If yuh waa good, yuh nose affi run.” Translation: if you want good, sometimes you have to sacrifice. I strongly believe that without a test, you can have no testimony.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I perform skin care and facial treatments with in-depth holistic-focused skin analysis with some elements stemming from an Ayurvedic approach. Skin treatments include advanced facials, chemical peels, microneedling, dermaplanning, back treatments, fascia work, lymphatic drainage, and many other advanced treatment modalities. These are done for women, men and young adults of all shades and tones (more melanated included). I also provide professional education on how to care for the skin of the youth, which is not very common.
With all the experience and accolades that I’ve gained, the knowledge and wisdom that I’ve obtained along with the passion that I possessed, I am fully aware that my God given purpose is to advocate, not just for the skin, but to guide and educate the public on skin wellness. In addition, to mentor estheticians globally, (students, transitioning, newly licensed and professionals), who are passionate not just about a profitable industry, but about the skin as an organ, the largest one at that. It is a lot deeper than skin deep, and I am here to change the narrative in that regard.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
The greatest attribute to my success is my integrity. I do not believe in compromising my integrity to follow the crowd. If I don’t know or understand something, I seek diligently to educate myself about it.
In addition, my passion is driven by genuine care. I know what it feels like to have problematic skin, inauthentic care and to not be heard as a client. I treat every client as I would want to be treated. I live by the Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you will have them do unto you.”- Luke 6:31. I firmly believe in quality over quantity to my core.
