Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Johnson.
Hi Adam, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been drawn to creating. When I was 10, I found my parents’ camcorder and started making little movies. By middle school I was animating in Flash, and in high school I was making short films, designing in Photoshop, and growing a YouTube channel to over 10,000 subscribers. That early love of creativity set the tone for everything I’ve done since.
After college at Sam Houston (with plenty of fun, mistakes, and lessons along the way), I bounced around doing odd jobs until I landed at Jonah’s Movers, a small, family-owned moving company. That was the turning point. I dove into marketing, IT, operations, and leadership — and most importantly, I got to see firsthand what it takes to build and grow a local business. That experience gave me a deep respect for business owners and showed me how much I enjoy helping them succeed.
That’s how On The Outskirt Marketing Co. came to life. What started as a few freelance projects grew into a business where I’ve now helped more than 30 local businesses improve their websites, show up on Google, and create sustainable marketing strategies that actually work. Today, I’m grateful to work directly with Houston-area business owners and keep the same focus I had at the start: building lean, effective marketing that makes a real difference.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not. Building a business solo means you wear every hat — sales, marketing, client work, admin, everything. There were plenty of times I questioned if I could actually pull it off.
One of the biggest challenges has been consistency. Most of my clients start month-to-month, so early on I felt like I was always one phone call away from losing a chunk of income. That taught me to focus hard on retention and building real relationships, not just quick wins.
Another struggle has been balance. When you’re running everything yourself, it’s easy to get stuck in the work instead of working on the business. I’ve had to learn to systematize, prioritize, and sometimes just trust the process.
The upside of those struggles is that they forced me to build lean, resilient systems. Every challenge pushed me to find smarter ways to work, and I think that’s shaped the business into what it is today.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
On The Outskirt Marketing Co. is a Houston-based digital marketing company focused on helping small and service-based businesses grow online. We specialize in SEO, web design, and conversion optimization — essentially making sure that when someone searches for your services, you actually get found, and when they land on your site, they take action.
What sets us apart is how lean and hands-on we are. I’ve seen too many small businesses spend money on agencies that overpromise, underdeliver, or bury them in fluff. My approach is simple: clear strategies, transparent communication, and systems that actually drive results. Every dollar matters for a small business, so I treat my clients’ marketing like it’s my own.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud that we’ve built a reputation for being honest and effective. Many of my clients have been with me for years, and they’ll tell you they feel more confident and in control of their marketing. That’s the part that excites me — seeing a local business owner go from stressed about leads to steady, predictable growth.
At the end of the day, On The Outskirt is about freedom and clarity: freeing business owners from the stress of marketing, and giving them clarity about what’s working and why. That’s the impact I want to keep bringing to Houston businesses.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
If there’s one thing I’d want readers to take away, it’s that marketing doesn’t have to be complicated or overwhelming. A clear, consistent strategy can make a huge difference — and you don’t need a giant budget or a big agency to get results.
I have a lot of respect for small business owners. I’ve seen firsthand how much heart and effort it takes to build something from the ground up, and it’s an honor to support that journey.
If you’re a business owner who’s ever felt stuck or unsure about your marketing, just know there are simple, effective ways forward. And I’m always open to connecting with people who want to grow and learn together.
