James Reid’s Stories, Lessons & Insights

We’re looking forward to introducing you to James Reid. Check out our conversation below.

James , it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
I recently became an award winning filmmaker. It was my first short film to write and direct and it was a big deal to me. I am still overwhelmed with joy.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is James Reid and I come from a small town outside of Houston, TX. I am an actor, writer, director, and producer. I think I’m unique because I hold many hats. Ever since I was a young boy, I have always wanted to be in the Film/TV industry. I would be watching TV and would repeat everything. I’d even perform for my family and friends. I got my start in the Film/TV industry when a movie was filmed in my hometown that needed extras. I expressed my passion for acting to some of the actors and director. They gave me their contact information and shared a lot of advice with me. The Director acted as well and was starring in a series that needed extras. I sent in my Information and got in. I met a young lady there and we hit it off. Later on, she’d star in a series that needed extras so once again, I sent in my information and got in. From there, I would network from set to set and my career would rise. With spending so much time on sets, I began to have an interest in being behind the camera so I decided to go to film school in California. It was there where I’d learn how to write scripts and direct. I have directed two short films and have several scripts written. I recently got awarded a Directors award at Panther City Film Festival. I just finished filming a short film that I’ll submit to film festivals to hopefully win another award.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
Definitely my Parents. From the time I could walk and talk, I was always performing for them in front of the TV. I shared a love for movies and TV and they definitely knew I would one day do something in Entertainment.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Oh absolutely! Plenty of times actually. I struggle with anxiety so worry a lot. When I’m on a set, I’m worried “Will I mess up and the director hate me? Will I get kicked off set? One time I was on a set and I tripped over an extension cord and a light almost fell. I was so embarrassed and felt terrible that I almost cried. After I was off set, I told myself I was done with the Film/TV industry. Not only have I wanted to give up on my passion, but I’ve wanted to give up on life. I have tried committing suicide. A lot came crashing down on me and I just felt worthless. I wanted to give up and just end it all. My life hasn’t been an easy, but I’ve learned that life is like a roller coaster. It has its ups and downs and is a journey. Thankfully I’ve had wonderful friends and family who have helped me through my tough times. I’m here talking to you today because I didn’t give up. I may have fallen, but I got back up and continued on with my life. I couldn’t end my life because I saw what life has to offer me. I have a wonderful family and friends and a great career. My tough times inspired me to write and direct a short film titled Mended that would tell my story of when I was trying to end my life. It’s a goal of mine to help others and know that you’re worth something even though you don’t think so. If you’re ever going through a hard time, just know that you CAN and you WILL get through it. Like dory from the movie Finding Nemo says” just keep swimming”.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I believe that one day I will become a full time actor and filmmaker. I have one particular script written that I want to film, but I know it’s going to take a lot of money and time. It’s about my time in high school. Basically a coming of age story. I’m very grateful of how far I’ve gotten in my career, but I know to get up higher, it will take a while.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people talk about how committed to my career I was. I have goals and visions and I believe I’ll be remembered for those. I have a big heart too.
