Today we’d like to introduce you to Hayley Allinson-Kuehn.
Hayley, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I came into into the realm of design and construction from a completely different path – I have a degree in forensic science and moved here from the UK to be with my now wife, Kristeen. But what we discovered is that Builders, decorators and craftsmen have always been in both our families and these knowledge and skills were distilled down to us throughout the years. Most often at an unconscious level, where helping out became hands on experience, creating the confidence to pace and design projects in our mind.
Spend 5 minutes with Kristeen in your home and you will quickly notice her meticulous attention to detail and keen perception of the space. Through volunteer work and just naturally helping family and friends, she built up this incredible wealth of construction knowledge. When disaster hit, we’d be the ones people called to help rebuild their homes.
Coming from forensic science, I bring an analytical approach to problem-solving and attention to detail that pairs perfectly with Kristeen’s hands-on construction expertise. We see spaces differently – she sees the structure and possibility, and I see the design and finer details needed to complete a space.
Those early remodel projects showed us something important – we weren’t just fixing what was broken, we were helping people reimagine their lives in these spaces. That’s when we realized we needed to make this official and use our talents to their fullest potential.
We have been in business since 2017 and over time, we discovered our passion and niche lies within the art of custom kitchen, bathroom and entire home remodels. This commitment to excellence is precisely why our clients choose us – and why they tell their friends about us. From the very first design sketch to the final walk-through, we treat our projects with the care and attention that it deserves. Client satisfaction and project success isn’t just our goal; it’s our reputation, our promise, and frankly, what gets us excited to come to work every single day.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not smooth – this industry can be tough to break into, especially as women. We’ve walked into rooms where we immediately had to prove we knew what we were talking about before anyone would take us seriously. There’s still an assumption that we’re just the ‘design side’ and someone else must be doing the ‘real work.’
Being an LGBTQ+ couple running a business together adds another layer. We’ve had to navigate clients who weren’t sure about us at first, but honestly, the clients who matter – the ones who become our biggest advocates – they see our work and our passion, and that’s what counts.
The immigration piece was huge too. Starting a business in a new country while learning different building codes, supplier relationships, permit processes – that was a steep learning curve. But all these challenges taught us to be resourceful and to really lean on each other.
What kept us going was seeing the impact of our work. When clients see their transformed space for the first time, when they tell us we’ve changed how they feel in their own home – that makes every struggle worth it.
In a field where women are still making their mark, we show up with tools, vision, and serious intention. We don’t just redesign spaces – we reimagine the entire way people live in them. Because where others see “ugly” or “outdated,” we see possibility.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Prime & Precision is a true design-build company, which means when you work with us, the designer is literally the builder. That’s huge because most companies split these roles, which can lead to miscommunication, budget overruns, and designs that don’t translate well to reality.
We specialize in kitchen and bathroom remodels, along with custom carpentry and entire -home transformations. Our sweet spot is taking spaces that feel stuck in the past and reimagining them for how people actually live today. We’re known for our attention to detail – every single element matters to us.
What I’m most proud of brand-wise is our integrated approach. We don’t just design beautiful spaces; we make sure they function perfectly for each client’s lifestyle. Whether that’s creating a kitchen that works for busy families or designing one of our signature curbless showers for aging-in-place accessibility.
We also offer different service levels – from our comprehensive turnkey service for clients who want us to handle everything, to more collaborative approaches where we work together on material choices and design decisions. The key is that we never leave clients wondering what’s next or where their money is going.
We also make custom furniture for clients and every piece is meticulously handcrafted in our Texas workshop, ensuring heirloom quality and one-of-a-kind character. Featured work from P&P Handcrafted includes bespoke furniture ranging from live edge walnut desks with resin inlays to bedroom dressers, magnetic knife racks and 3D art , all handcrafted with attention to detail and quality.
At the end of the day, we want people to fall in love with their homes all over again. That’s not just about aesthetics – it’s about creating spaces that truly support how they want to live.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
We didn’t get here alone. First and foremost, our families deserve huge credit. Growing up around skilled tradespeople and designers gave us this foundation of knowledge and respect for craftsmanship that we carry into every project.
Our early clients were amazing, they took a chance on us when we were just starting out, and their trust meant everything. Many of our clients have become friends and advocates who referred friends and neighbors. Word-of-mouth has been the backbone of our growth.
The local Houston contractor and supplier community has been surprisingly welcoming once they saw the quality of our work. Having reliable partnerships with suppliers and specialty trades is crucial in this business – you can’t do it all yourself.
I also have to mention the other women in construction and design who’ve paved the way before us. Seeing their success gave us permission to believe we could do this too. And now we try to pay that forward when we meet other women considering this path.
Kristeen and I are each other’s biggest supporters, but we’ve also learned to lean on our network. Whether it’s bouncing ideas off other designers, getting advice from seasoned builders, or just having people who understand the unique challenges of running a business together as a couple – that community has been invaluable.
Every client who trusted us with their home, every referral, every encouraging word along the way – they all played a part in getting us here.
