Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Rice.
Robert, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Prior to purchasing a ONE Sports Nation franchise, I spent 14 years working in Recruitment in the Energy and IT industries. As the years went by, it became increasingly more difficult to attract talent to the organizations due to issues in with corporate politics, ignoring company values, and poor treatment of staff.
Many professionals come to a cross road after reaching a certain stage in their career. I could continue to keep searching for that mythical company that was aligned with my values or go out on my own. After researching several franchise opportunities, I selected ONE Sports Nation. I chose the sports route because of my previous life as an athlete.
Growing up, I had played basketball, football, baseball and track & field. I won a National Championship in high school, competed and Jr, National Olympics and was awarded a track & field scholarship.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We have had some ups and downs. Mostly financial. The original investment was accounted for, but the cost of marketing has been very expensive. Since we are a for-profit, we don’t have access to the schools to promote our business. There are also the usual staffing challenges. Ensuring game days go off without a hitch when your staff doesn’t show up can also be a struggle.
ONE Sports Nation – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
ONE Sports Nation offers NFL Flag Football, Jr. NBA Basketball, CHEERLEADING, and Soccer for boys and girls ages 3-15 years.
Our Mission
A Dual Focus: To develop young athletes and prepare them for their next level of competition while keeping them excited about playing sports. Develop programming that Honors the Game by keeping the program rules as close to high school rules as possible with due consideration for the various age divisions that we serve and teaching kids the right way, the first time.
We provide coach training to increase the quality of adult leadership in our leagues that promotes the delivery of a positive youth sports experience for each player consistent with the Mission and Vision of ONE SPORTS NATION. We encourage a healthy balance of “want-to-win” but, “don’t-have-to-win” competitive fun atmosphere. What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is defined by a high retention rate and through referrals. Our goal is to be the best and biggest sports league in the Katy/Fulshear area. Each season we are looking for our numbers to grow.
