Today we’d like to introduce you to Begga Hall.
Hi Begga, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born and raised in Iceland. I spent most of my career there working in the spa industry, which I absolutely loved. Health and wellness have always been passions of mine.
Although Iceland is a wonderful place to grow up, I always felt a yearning to travel and experience life abroad. Deep down, I knew I would one day live in another country. That day came in the summer of 2009, when a coworker introduced me to her American cousin—who would later become my husband. I moved to the United States in 2010, received my permanent residency, and eventually became a U.S. citizen.
I’ve lived in Galveston, Texas ever since, and I have to say—Texans are some of the friendliest and kindest people I’ve ever met. The weather isn’t bad either! I gladly traded the cold and snow for warmth and sunshine, although Texas summers can be quite brutal. My husband and I make it a point to visit family in Iceland during the summer months to escape the heat and humidity.
Interestingly, my husband’s grandmother was also Icelandic. She met her future American husband while he was stationed in Iceland during World War II. Fast forward to today, and our Icelandic-American family has grown to a few hundred people spread across the US and Iceland.
Wanting to continue my career in the wellness field, I attended Massage Therapy School right here in Galveston. After earning my license, I started my business in my hometown of Jamaica Beach, Texas, where I still live and work. Jamaica Beach, located on the west end of Galveston Island, has changed so much over the past 16 years—from a quiet, post-hurricane town to a lively and vibrant community.
At first, I wasn’t sure whether opening a massage therapy practice on the west end was a good idea. But I decided to take a chance, believing there was a need for quality massage services in this growing beach community. It turned out to be the best decision I could have made. The island’s west end has seen steady growth, and both full-time residents and weekend visitors have welcomed me warmly. They love the convenience of not having to drive all the way into town for a massage.
Over the years, my clientele has grown steadily through word of mouth. I rarely need to advertise, thanks to my amazing clients who continue to recommend my services. Having a career that allows me to help people feel better—whether through a relaxing massage or by addressing chronic concerns such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, or muscle pain—is incredibly rewarding.
My clients arrive happy and leave even happier—what’s not to love about that? I truly enjoy being a positive influence in their lives and always look forward to catching up with them during their visits. It’s been a wonderful journey, and I’m grateful every day to do what I love.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The pandemic hit just a few months after I opened my business, which definitely created some unexpected challenges. But once I was able to reopen, things started to flow smoothly. Since then, I’ve been fortunate that everything has progressed much as I envisioned.
We’ve been impressed with Massage by Begga/Ocean Spa, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My focus is to provide each client with a relaxing massage experience that also includes targeted, deep work on areas of muscle tension. I also offer hot stone therapy—a wonderful addition that enhances relaxation and helps melt away stress.
Another option on my service menu is a CBD-infused massage. I’m a strong believer in natural therapeutics, and many of my clients have shared that they feel the benefits of their massage last longer when incorporating CBD oil. I use only high-quality CBD oil, which is also available for purchase for everyday use at home.
For those who enjoy a touch of extra pampering, I offer a mini facial add-on to complement your massage session—perfect for a complete head-to-toe relaxation experience.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Continuing education is an essential part of working in this field. There is always something new to learn, and an endless variety of both online and in-person classes available to help stay current with the latest techniques and trends. Networking with other therapists is also invaluable—sharing ideas, experiences, and insights not only broadens my knowledge but also inspires me to grow as a practitioner. Connecting with others in the wellness community helps me stay motivated, exchange referrals, and discover new approaches that ultimately benefit my clients.
