Life & Work with Meredith Nudo of Montrose

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meredith Nudo.

Hi Meredith, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
When I was a kid, girls only had two options for what they could be when they grew up: pretty or smart. I ultimately didn’t end up as either, so I went for funny.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It wasn’t smooth. It hasn’t been smooth. And it never will be smooth. That’s the inherent nature of a life in the arts and humanities in a country that doesn’t value either as real labor. I’m very fortunate to have a flexible day job for my writing, but there’s always the fear of layoffs (I was laid off from full-time writing work 3 times in 7 years) and gig work on the side ebbs and flows. Sometimes you’ll go months without booking or pitches getting picked up. And with the popularity of generative AI and people wrongly presuming that all the heart and humanity we infuse into our work is replicable, the fiscal challenges are only getting worse. If you genuinely care about art, invest your attention (and money if you have it) in human hands.

Ireland just announced a universal basic income for professional creatives, which I think the rest of the world should consider adopting, too. We provide a valuable service to the world. Imagine your life with no movies, video games, books and comics, music, dance, art, etc. at all. How empty and dull would it be? Exactly. So why shouldn’t we make a living off our skills?

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an improv and sketch comedian, voice actor, and the senior culture editor at Houstonia Magazine, and I am proud of all of it. There’s no such thing as a small role or a small story, just roles and stories that contribute different things to the whole creative process and my growth as an artist. My focus is on doing the work, and my goals revolve around constantly learning and improving.

As for what set me me apart from others, nothing. That’s what’s extraordinary and beautiful about all this, is how lucky I’ve been despite not standing out. I let my results say what they need to say and people can decide if I’m a good fit for a project from there.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Honesty and integrity. You can be the most brilliant and influential creative in the world, adored by all, a room full of accolades and a bank vault like Scrooge McDuck’s, but if you’re a piece of shit as a human I don’t see any need to seek working with you. I find far more value in working with people who may be super new and untested, including making beginner’s mistakes, if they have good attitudes and hearts and commit themselves to growing their art.
