Hi Mimi & Johnae, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
It all started from a dream and a passion. Mimi’s passion for cooking and Johnae’s dream of opening a restaurant. Peppaz HTX was founded by Mimi Jones and Johnae Bernard. What started off as cooking made-to-order plates from their home kitchen soon grew to something much bigger. Starting this venture was not easy, as we were in the middle of the COVID-19 Pandemic, when restaurants and bars were closed, and the only things thriving were food trucks. So, you know what we did, we opened up our first food truck in 2022.
As we hustled the streets of Houston, our food truck paved the way for us to open up our first brick-and-mortar location at the Lyric Market in the downtown Houston Theater District in 2025. Peppaz HTX serves up the best chicken sandwiches in Houston, and you can have it “Classy or Trashy”, we also serve up bold sides like crispy fried broccoli, and our freshly squeezed lemonades flavored with fresh fruit. We describe Peppaz as more than just food—it’s our story, love, passion, and dream.
We’re touching the hearts of people one bite at a time.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road as we have had some challenges. Learning how to run a business, how to operate a food truck, how to maintain consistency and how to be your financial advisor. Over the years we have learned that you have to be hands on and be your own planner, mechanic, content creator, marketing advisor and so much more.
As you know, we’re big fans of Peppax HTX. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Peppaz HTX is a restaurant that is located in the Downtown, Theater District. We specialize in chicken and serve things like Main Chicks that include our chicken sandwiches that you can get “Naked, Classy or Trashy”. Our Side Chicks, which include our unforgettable “fried broccoli”. Also, our Thirsty and Sweet Chicks, which include our freshly squeezed lemonade and homemade baked chocolate chip cookies.
What sets us apart is our passion, love, and marinating our chicken for 24 hours.
We are proud of our values and believe that what sets us apart is consistency, authenticity, and love.
