Exploring Life & Business with Sophia Davenport of Sophia Forest Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia Davenport.

Sophia Davenport

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that your purpose usually finds you when life feels heavy. I started doing videography for fun back in 2009 — it helped me cope with anxiety, and honestly, I’ve always loved having a camera in my hand. In every home video from when I was little, I’m begging my parents to show me the other side of the camera. I’ve never loved being in front of it as much as I do behind it. From 2017 to 2019, I filmed weddings before Covid hit, and even though I loved it, life shifted fast.

When my daughter was born in 2021, everything changed. Motherhood made me stronger and more aware of what really matters. After years of mental health struggles and postpartum challenges, I started picking up my camera again in 2023 — taking photos of my daughter’s milestones, my friends’ newborns, and little everyday moments that made me feel whole again.

By summer 2024, I decided to go all in. I bought the camera I’d always wanted and just started. Since then, I’ve made amazing friends and witnessed moments I’ll never forget — photographing a mom having her last baby unmedicated, celebrating women finally expecting after years of trying, capturing rainbow babies held tight by their families & all the in-between moments.

I love photographing family sessions, milestones, seniors, and everything in between — but there’s something truly magical about motherhood. It’s been messy, beautiful, and healing — and every time I pick up my camera, I’m reminded that the thing that once grounded me has turned into the life I love most.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I’ve had my fair share of rough seasons — from postpartum and mental health struggles to figuring out how to be a mom, partner, and business owner all at once. There were a lot of late nights editing, moments of doubt & way too much comparing myself to other photographers who seemed to have it all figured out.

Starting out wasn’t glamorous either. I didn’t have all the best gear or endless free time — I was just trying to build something real while raising my daughter with my wife, Kasey, and keeping up with life. All while also being a special education teacher to those too medically fragile or behaviorally challenged to attend public school. But every challenge has taught me something, and every family I’ve photographed reminds me why I started. I’m proud of the girl I was before I became a mom, because she fought to get me here. She’s gone now — and in her place is someone who’s still learning, still growing, but finally learning to believe she belongs here.

As you know, we’re big fans of Sophia Forest Photography. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Sophia Forest Photography is all about real life — the chaos, the calm, and everything in between. I photograph families, motherhood, milestones and more, but I think what people know me for most is how real my sessions feel. I’m not about the stiff posing or fake smiles — I want to capture moments that actually mean something. The messy hugs, the laughs, the way your kid looks at you — that’s the good stuff.

What makes my work different is how personal it is. I truly care about the people in front of my camera. I’ve cried with moms, laughed with dads who swore they’d hate photos, and chased toddlers barefoot through fields. It’s not just photos for me — it’s connection.

I started this business with a camera I bought on a credit card and a dream to do something that mattered. Now, I get to create memories people will hang in their homes for years. I love what I do, and I want people to walk away from their session feeling seen, loved, and reminded that their everyday chaos is something worth remembering.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Honestly, I just want people to remember that I’m a human being with human feelings — I’m figuring life out like everyone else. My wife is my biggest supporter, best blanket and gear carrier, bonus mom to our daughter, and the calm in all my chaos. I truly couldn’t do this without her.

I’m also trying to raise my daughter in a world that doesn’t feel so scary. If I can show her, through my work, how many good people are out there — the families, couples, and moms who trust me with their memories — then I know I’m doing something right.

Sophia Forest Photography isn’t just about me; it’s about the life I’ve built and the one I’m still creating. Every session is a little piece of that. I can’t wait to keep meeting new people, hearing their stories, and capturing the kind of moments that make this whole thing worth it.
