Check Out Deissy Rodriguez’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deissy Rodriguez.

Hi Deissy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started cutting hair about 10 years ago as a way to express my creativity. I’ve always had a love for art, and barbering became the perfect outlet for that. Braiding began as a hobby, but with encouragement from a mentor, I gained the confidence to take it seriously and grow my skills.
With the help of my mentor and coworkers, I am proud of my work, and ready for whatever challenge walks through the door.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of my biggest challenges was building a solid clientele. Being a woman in a male-dominated industry, some clients didn’t feel confident in my ability to cut hair. But through long hours, consistency, and word-of-mouth referrals, I slowly built my own client base and proved myself.

With braiding, a big challenge was not realizing how different hair textures require different products. At first, I didn’t know what worked best for everyone. So I took classes, did my research, and learned what products I needed to use to meet each client’s specific needs.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m both a barber and a braider, and I specialize in creating intricate braid designs. I combine both barbering and braiding, giving clients the full experience from start to finish — all in one chair.

I’m most proud of the relationships I’ve built over the years. Having my clients trust me — not just with their hair, but with their time and their energy — means everything. That trust is something I never take for granted.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I love most about our city is the diversity — I get to meet people from so many different walks of life, and I learn something new from my clients every day. I really enjoy the sense of community here, and I appreciate how the city’s culture shows up in everything from fashion to conversations in the chair.

What I don’t love as much is the lack of reliable public transportation. Sometimes everything feels so spread out, and getting around can be a challenge — especially for people without a car.
