Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Failla.
Heather, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I graduated from Lamar University in 1993 with an associates degree in Interior Design. Unfortunately, I was unable to get a job in the industry after college due to a recession so I went to work for a doctor. I’ve accidentally been in healthcare ever since. Two years ago the pandemic caught up with my company and we lost a major client because they sold out and I had to take a 25% pay cut. Instead of changing jobs I decided to keep this one and start a business and finally do what I’ve always wanted to. While I’ve always done design projects over the last 32 years but none professionally. I started my business in January 2024 primarily doing staging to help build capital. I obtained a certification in home staging, redesign and as a certified home marketing specialist. As it had been so long since I got my degree I decided to also obtained a certification in interior design. I’m still working my full time job while building my business every evening and on weekends. I was invited by Berkshire-Hathaway Properties to advertise in the latest Home Planning Guide and I’ve recently partnered with design/construction company to provide design services. I’m really looking forward to the day where Cu29 Designs is my full time job.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The hardest part has been getting clients. I do not have an extensive portfolio so I can understand why anyone would hesitate to hire to me. I’m working on a big project now for a personal friend so I’m hoping photos from that should be helpful.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve always loved design since I was a kid. I saved and saved in order to make changes to my bedroom. I believe that really helped to understand why a client would hesitate to hire a designer. Typically, interior design is a luxury service but I offer a few options that are more affordable as well. Also, so many people I know have had bad experiences with designers. A lot of Interior Designers want the project to be THEIR design more than the client’s design. I want everyone to be able to live in their version of the magazine. A space that is the definition of who they are and their lifestyle.
When I say I love all design styles I really mean it. My personal style is more of a transitional/eclectic combination but right now I’m helping my sister-in-law decorate her new home and her style Boho and I’m having so much fun. My current client is rustic/shabby chic. I have made it a habit to study all styles all the time so I feel qualified to help anyone at anytime.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Hard to narrow down the most important. Being organized is so important. I use some great software that has been invaluable. I’ve really learned how to use the floor plan and rendering features as well. Up until now I’ve always drawn by hand.
I’ve learned that my life in corporate America has actually been a huge benefit. Processes and managing a project are key in interior design and I believe my experience with both will be extremley helpful.
