Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonya Patel.
Sonya, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My early exposure to acupuncture through my parents significantly shaped my perspective on health and healing. My mother, a pharmacist, prioritized natural remedies, and both she and my father found relief from their respective ailments through acupuncture. At the age of 13, I experienced debilitating migraines that severely impacted my life. After exploring conventional medical options, my mother introduced me to acupuncture. Within six months, my migraines were effectively managed, and I regained my quality of life, excelling in school and social activities. My initial academic path at the University of Houston was in nutrition. However, during an internship at MD Anderson, I became fascinated by the complementary medicine modalities patients used to manage the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation. This experience pivoted my career aspirations towards acupuncture, recognizing its potential to help patients in a profoundly different way. A pivotal moment that solidified my dedication to acupuncture occurred during my final semester at the University of Houston. I was severely injured after being struck by a car. I sustained multiple injuries, including crushed legs and a fractured back, leading to months in a wheelchair. Despite doctor’s prognosis that I would never walk or run without a limp; I chose acupuncture over conventional pain medication. My acupuncturist treated me 2-3 times a week, and within a couple of months, I was walking unassisted. This remarkable recovery not only defied medical expectations but also reinforced my unwavering determination to become an acupuncturist. My personal experiences have unequivocally demonstrated the profound healing power of acupuncture, solidifying my resolve to dedicate my professional life to this practice.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A significant personal hurdle I recently overcame was raising my daughter, Mira, as a single mother for most of her life. This journey began when she was an infant, and while we are approaching her 18th birthday, the initial years were particularly demanding. Balancing the responsibilities of company ownership, extensive office hours, and pursuing a second doctorate presented numerous difficulties. I firmly believe in practicing what I advocate, particularly regarding mindfulness. Therefore, it was crucial for me to dedicate time to my daughter, attending her school events and performances. Similarly, community service through volunteering holds significant importance for me, and carving out time for such commitments often required careful planning. It is definitely rewarding to serve our Fort Bend and surrounding areas and raise my daughter in a supportive community.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
