Today we’d like to introduce you to Randall Gonzales.
Hi Randall, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
What do you get when you cross a blue-collar kid from Houston: an honors college graduate from the University of Houston Clearlake with years of honors social science research on top of being a hairstylist with over 30 years of experience? You get me, Randall Valentino Gonzales. Here’s my story, and I’m sticking to it!
From Humble Beginnings to a Hair Stylist: A Journey of Transformation
An Unconventional Path
My journey after high school was not the traditional college experience. I come from a blue-collar family with limited financial resources, so my approach to education differed from that of my friends. I worked while attending school. But once I was in college, I was fortunate enough to receive Pell Grants that allowed me to enroll in community college. Alternatively, while my friends went on to attend more prestigious institutions, I remained incredibly proud of my community college experience.
A Fortuitous Opportunity
Then, after just a year and a half of community college, an unexpected opportunity arose. I received an offer to become a hairstylist in an affluent area of Houston. This single moment truly changed everything.
Following in Mom’s Footsteps
Becoming a hairstylist felt incredibly natural because my mom owned her own hair salon while I was growing up. I’d spent many years there as a kid, helping out and unconsciously absorbing countless skills. This early immersion made it an easy choice. Now, as an adult, working in a fancy hair salon would be a stark contrast to my mom’s place, which often buzzed with blue-haired old ladies under dryers, engrossed in soap opera magazines. There was no way I’d let this incredible opportunity slip away.
From Vocational School to Industry Revelation
After leaving community college, I enrolled in cosmetology school. A year later, I proudly earned my hair license and started my career. However, after a couple of years working in various salons and experiencing different industry cultures, my perspective shifted profoundly.
The “McDonaldization” of the Beauty Industry
I witnessed what I called the battle of the divas-hairstylist, lots of egos, and encountered obnoxious salon owners who prioritized profit over quality service. Stylists often felt like cogs in an assembly line, a concept I termed the “McDonaldization of the beauty industry,” borrowing from sociologist George Ritzer’s “McDonaldization of society.” This phenomenon describes a social process that produces “mind-numbing sameness.” I observed and saw this phenomenon replicated in many salons, from large chains to smaller establishments.
The Pressures of “Stress Booking”
Then, to add to the assembly line metaphor, I often observed how “stress booking” tactics negatively impacted stylists’ work. Salon owners, primarily focused on the bottom line by booking stylists back-to-back with clients. Compounding this, stylists themselves would push for more clients, even when it meant their quality of service suffered. This constant pressure led to rushed, gimmicky haircuts and color services.
Feeling Like a Cog in the Machine
So, being in this profession, I felt uninspired and limited by the routine of simply cutting the latest trends or performing quick, gimmicky services often aimed solely at boosting salon profits! All this made me feel like another cog in an assembly line: hamburger, bun, mustard, pickle, tomato—you get the picture!
Escaping the Sameness
What’s more, there was the burnout from constant product pushing was undeniable. (There is a lot more to this, but that’s for another time-perhaps the book I may write). Truly, I felt a dumbing effect happening! There was no substance to product pushing or cut-and-paste looks on everyone! I realized I needed more. I decided to return to college! After completing my community college requirements, of course, I had to specialize in a field of study. I chose to go to the University of Houston Clear Lake to study human behavior: Behavioral Science with a minor in Psychology. Ultimately, I graduated with honors, consistently maintaining academic excellence while becoming an honors social science researcher on this journey (to know better). At this point, what once made perfect sense about the world and the beauty industry simply didn’t anymore. I can see clearly now, and it was not pretty!
Transforming Perspectives with Social Sciences
So, graduating from the Human Sciences and Humanities department at UHCL was crucial for me. My studies in social sciences, specifically behavioral science and psychology, deepened my understanding of a wide range of topics. These included social science research techniques, women in society, cognitive psychology, social psychology, psychobiology, and much more. Crucially, I also took advanced writing courses to effectively communicate about human behavior, emotions, cognition, and interpersonal relationships. This knowledge ultimately transformed my perspective on life and the beauty industry.
My Academic Foundation: Inspiring Your Paradigm Shift
Clearly, my perspective has evolved significantly after I graduated! My academic journey laid a strong foundation for a profound shift in my worldview-a paradigm shift: A concept that describes a fundamental change in how one views the world. But, before this accomplishment, I knew I was limited by my lack of understanding of how the world really works. The only thing I knew was the difference between the haves and have-nots. I had come from the have-not.
Embracing a Paradigm Shift
Now that my educational journey had begun, I knew I would be able to have the life I had always dreamed of. Undoubtedly, my expanded understanding of human behavior and social dynamics profoundly impacted my approach to life, especially in the beauty industry. I did not pursue this path; ironically, it pursued me! Ultimately, after years of working in the beauty industry, I opened up R Valentino Hair Salon (2017) in the River Oaks Shopping Center, hosted by the Phenix Salon Suites. Now, I can really be free from all the brainwashing I see in the industry. So, I dared to be different!
Daring to Be Different: My Vision for Hairdressing
A New Vision for Hair Styling
Introducing Behavioral Haircut Color Science (BHCS)
In the beginning-2017-of my journey as a hair salon owner/operator, for the first seven years working in my hair salon, I was doing Qualitative Research (QR) on the before, during, and after a hair service with a client. Most importantly, how a client’s hairstyle becomes a social phenomenon in their lives is an area rich for research. From this research, I’ve developed an educational concept called Behavioral Haircut Color Science (BHCS), which I have trademarked my intellectual property as “Scandal Randall™” to make it memorable. After all, who doesn’t want to feel a little bit scandalous after a great haircut? Moreover, BHCS describes how there is a “method to the madness” behind a successful collaboration between stylist and client to achieve the perfect look for their “right now.” I have developed a curriculum (The Art and Science of Client-Centric Hair Design: Mastering Behavioral Haircut and Color Science (BHCS) to share with hairstylists-ones willing to open their minds-to help them expand their creative thought. Because, while in cosmetology school, a vocational trade school only teaches a skill: the “how and what” in the profession. But what I offer is the “why” in the vocational skill. Before I forget, as for the name “Scandal Randall,” it was a nickname I got in my 20s—a story for another time! But for now, who doesn’t want to feel a little scandalous after a great haircut?
Redefining Beauty: From Trends to “Hairapy”
I genuinely wanted to help people see their inner beauty within to be expressed on the outside through a hairstyle that truly represents them, versus the copy-paste off celebrities or one found on Pinterest. So, I aimed to better understand their needs and not just mimic the latest hair trend, like “The Rachel” haircut from the TV show “Friends”. Throughout the years while working, I frequently heard clients refer to their hairstylists as de facto therapists. So, my goal was to become their “hairapist” during a “hairapy” session-all puns intended. Please note: I use familiar terms to describe unfamiliar concepts, avoiding psychological jargon for clarity.
A Mindful and Holistic Approach to Beauty
Ultimately, my degree has broadened my mind beyond a vocational skill. I studied so many interdisciplinary fields like sociology, anthropology, and neuroscience, to name a few. This wealth of knowledge provided me with a deeper insight into human behavior and promotes well-being. By combining my 30 years as a licensed cosmetologist with my behavioral science and psychology degree, I offer a truly mindful and holistic approach to my clients’ beauty needs. Specifically, I gain a better understanding of their individual preferences, personalities, and emotions (what BHCS teaches).
The “Method to the Madness” in Action
This unique combination of what I do truly sets me apart. I invite you to read my Google reviews to see what clients are saying about the “Method to the Madness” when experiencing my Behavioral Haircut Color Science (BHCS).
In Summary: Redefining the Beauty Industry
My journey from humble beginnings to a hairstylist with a behavioral science and psychology degree has been one of continuous learning and evolution. My blog aims to inspire others to shift their perspective in the beauty industry. Just know that change is the only constant in life, and the next hair service might just be about changing everything.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
“A smooth road? Absolutely not. It’s been a thrilling, and at times treacherous, climb. The struggles were very real, touching everything from industry resistance to deeply personal challenges. When you’re trying to introduce a true paradigm shift, you learn quickly that the ‘old guard’ doesn’t step aside quietly.
I’m channeling that entire, winding story—all the grit and the breakthroughs—into my upcoming book. It covers my whole journey, from my humble beginnings to the development of my educational concept. I can’t reveal all the twists and turns just yet, but let’s just say the full story is one people won’t see coming. It’s a story of transformation I hope will inspire others… but you’ll have to wait for the manuscript to get the complete picture.”
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
On the surface, I’m a hairstylist with over 30 years in the industry and the owner of R Valentino Hair Salon here in Houston. But my real work, my true specialty, operates at the intersection of two worlds that cross paths: cosmetology and behavioral science.
What I’m known for is an approach I’ve spent the last seven years developing from my research—a specific “method to the madness” for understanding the client-stylist dynamic. It’s an educational concept I call Behavioral Haircut Color Science (BHCS), which I’ve trademarked under the more memorable name, Scandal Randall™.
What sets me apart is that unique foundation. I’m not just a hairstylist; I am a rubics cube of thought. I see the world in colors-think of color psychology. I didn’t just want to do hair; I wanted to understand the why behind the entire experience—how a hairstyle becomes a social phenomenon in a client’s life.
I’m incredibly proud of earning that degree while working full-time, but what I’m most proud of is connecting that academic knowledge to my three decades of practical skill. I’ve taken that research and structured it into a formal concept.
I’m actually in the process of writing a book and developing the full educational curriculum for it right now. It’s a framework that I believe can fundamentally shift our industry’s perspective, moving us beyond trends and into something much more profound. It redefines the consultation and turns a “hairapy” session into a true collaboration… but you’ll have to wait for the book to learn the complete method. This is what sets me apart by daring to be different!
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Am I a risk-taker? Absolutely. It’s not just something I do; it’s a core part of who I am and how I see the world.
My whole perspective on risk can be summed up in a mantra I share with my clients every day. When we’re talking about their look and style, I always tell them to “Dare to be different!” I want to inspire them to break out of a rut and try something that truly reflects them.
But it goes so much deeper than hair. It recently hit me like an epiphany—the real challenge I pose to them, and to myself, is: “If not now-when?”
Being your authentic self is the biggest risk anyone can take. Staying stagnant, playing it safe, and doing what everyone else is doing… that’s easy. But when you do that, you risk losing out on the greatest adventures life has to offer.
I’ve taken major risks all my life. After my mom passed away, I took a full year off to heal. Professionally, that’s a massive gamble. When I came back, I had lost all my clients. Then, I faced another mountain: I decided to open R Valentino Hair Salon, a one-stylist salon, starting from absolute scratch. I had zero clients on the books. It was just me and a vision.
Has it been a smooth road? Not at all. I’ve fallen. I’ve faced setbacks. But the biggest lesson I’ve learned from a lifetime of risk-taking is that it’s not about avoiding the fall; it’s about what you do after!
You keep getting back up! Every single time!
That’s my view on risk. It’s not about being reckless. It’s about being brave enough to be who you truly are, to build the life you want, and to embrace the adventure. The only true failure is the risk you were too afraid to take!
Pricing:
- its variable on the type of service: I stay what the norm is for my area.
- The biggest mind blowing aspect to what i do price wise is undercharge!
- Clients are blown away by this and think long and hard and end up tipping me way more than what they would have paid any way.
- Its the psychology of giving and recieving.
