Today we’d like to introduce you to Yvette Hall.
Yvette, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey into entrepreneurship began long before I even knew what that word meant. Today, I’ve owned Made You Look Hair Studio for over 15 years, but the spark started when I was just a little girl with big dreams and a few Mary Kay samples.
Back in elementary school, I’d sneak my mother’s cosmetic samples and sell them to my older sister’s friends for ten cents each. That small hustle soon evolved into me setting up my own makeshift “salon” during recess. I’d bring nail polish, a tiny battery-powered radio, and gather my friends to paint their nails right there on the pavement. I didn’t realize it then, but those moments were shaping the entrepreneur in me.
At 13, my mother took me to a professional salon for the first time. I remember being mesmerized, watching every movement of the stylist, every technique, every transformation. That day, something clicked. I went home and started experimenting on my own hair then later my sisters and her friends, charging ten dollars for the latest styles. That little side hustle became my passion.
In high school, I enrolled in Cosmetology School and was determined to turn that passion into a career. By the time I graduated, I was already licensed and ready to dive in. I began working in a salon, not as a stylist at first, but as a shampoo technician for the owner. I wanted to learn everything, the business, the artistry, the client experience. Looking back, that was one of the smartest moves I ever made. It taught me patience, discipline, and the value of mastering the basics.
Within a few years, I worked my way onto the salon floor, building a loyal clientele, many of whom still sit in my chair today. Four years later, I took a leap of faith and opened my own salon suite. That decision eventually grew into what is now Made You Look Hair Studio, my dream come true and a space where creativity, confidence, and beauty come alive every day.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey wasn’t always glamorous or easy. Over the years several hurricanes hit our area, sometimes the salon coming out unscathed but sometimes causing flooding, equipment and roof damage, forcing me to rehab. Just as I’m finding my rhythm again, Covid happened. Overnight, I had to shut down my business completely. The chairs sat empty, the doors were closed and for the first time, there was no income coming in. I didn’t know what the future held. Let’s not forget about the terrible freeze that happened in Houston in February 2021 freezing and bursting pipes putting business on pause.
Even after reopening, there were seasons were things felt uncertain, stylist transitioning out, leaving empty chairs and quiet days. As a business owner, those moments test not just your strength, but your faith.
Through every storm, literal and figurative, it was my faith in God that kept me grounded. Looking back now, I see every setback prepared me for greater resilience. Every flood, every closure, every empty chair taught me something about trust, endurance and grace.
What I’ve learned is this: when you let God be the foundation of your business, He will give you the strength to rebuild everytime.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Made You Look Hair Studio ?
I’ve been a professional stylist for 26 years, and in that time, I’ve had the honor of working with just about every texture and type of hair you can imagine. I’m best known for my short pixies and precision cuts. There’s something about creating a clean, confident look that brings out a woman’s strength and personality and I love being part of that transformation!
What really sets me apart, though, is my heart for healthy, natural hair. I don’t just want my clients to look amazing when they leave, I want their hair to be amazing underneath the style. For me, it all starts with a great shampoo. That’s the part of the salon experience that so many overlook, but I believe it’s the moment where everything slows down, where you can relax, breathe, and just let go.
Customer service means everything to me. I respect my clients’ time, and I do my best to make sure no one ever has to sit and wait. When you’re in my chair, you have my full attention ,whether you want to chat, laugh, vent, or just enjoy a quiet moment to yourself.
My salon, Made You Look Hair Studio, is truly my heart. It’s a place where you can come in, feel at home, and leave not only looking your best but feeling your best. Around here, you’ll get healthy hair, timely service, a peaceful atmosphere and maybe even a little free therapy on the side.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
First and foremost, I want to give honor to God. Without Him and without my faith, I truly would have folded. He’s been my strength, my guide, and the reason I’ve been able to keep going through every storm and season of uncertainty.
I also want to thank all of my clients, past, present, and future. Your loyalty and support have meant more to me than words can ever express. Many of you have stood by me through literal rain, sleet, and snow time after time and I’m forever grateful. There have been moments when you all encouraged me through difficult seasons in both my business and personal life. I’ve had the joy of watching some of you grow from middle schoolers to getting married and having children of your own. It’s been an honor to be part of your journeys as you’ve been part of mine.
I can’t forget to thank my sisters, Ketra and Jennifer, for being my very first “models” when I was just starting out, proudly wearing my early styles and cheering me on from day one. In fact, my salon name was inspired by one of those moments! My sister once said, “Every time I go somewhere, my hairstyle makes them look. You make them look!” And just like that, Made You Look Hair Studio was born.
And finally, I want to give thanks to my mother, Faye. She didn’t just tell me about perseverance and determination , she showed me what it looked like. She’s one of the strongest women I know, and I’m proud to say that strength rubbed off on me. Her example is why I never quit, no matter how hard the road gets.
Through it all, I’ve learned that when you put God first, He’ll not only open doors, He’ll give you the grace and strength to walk through them.
