Rising Stars: Meet Angela Bates of Houston, TX

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Bates.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started writing early in life, but for a long time, I didn’t feel like I had anything worth writing about. I thought journalism might be my path, but a negative experience with a college instructor changed my direction completely. I stepped away from writing and built a career in corporate America instead. Years later, a freelance copywriting project brought me back to what I loved most—storytelling. What began as a short-term assignment turned into a long-term partnership with the owner of a major beauty brand, which led to opportunities to ghostwrite for film and television actors, directors, and public figures.

Helping my dad, John H. Bates, write his memoir, Somerset: Seasons of Change, was especially life-changing—for our family and for everyone who’s had the chance to read it. His story reminded me that our personal truths have the power to heal and inspire others, no matter where we start from. That realization became the heartbeat of The Write CEO—a community created to help aspiring authors find clarity, direction, and confidence in their voices. My mission is to help others overcome self-doubt, tap into their creativity, and finally share the stories they were meant to tell.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been far from easy. Taking my work to an audience that’s increasingly fixated on AI tools has completely changed how people view writing and creativity. Many assume that technology can replace the depth, emotion, and cultural nuance that only human storytelling can bring—and that’s been a major shift to navigate. As a celebrity ghostwriter building a writing agency, I’ve also faced the challenge of bridging two worlds: the private, behind-the-scenes nature of ghostwriting and the public-facing mission of helping aspiring authors find their voices. There’s the constant balance of protecting client confidentiality while showcasing my expertise, earning trust from new writers, and reminding people that authentic storytelling still matters. Despite the obstacles, those challenges have refined my purpose. They’ve taught me that writing isn’t just about words—it’s about connection, truth, and leaving a legacy that no algorithm can replicate.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At my core, I’m a storyteller. I’ve had the privilege of writing behind the scenes for beauty moguls, film and television talent, and even political figures whose names you’d recognize—but whose words often needed a voice that could translate their vision into something real and relatable. That’s where I come in. As a ghostwriter and communications strategist, I specialize in helping people find the language for their legacy—whether that’s through a book, a brand, or a message that moves people. I’m known for my ability to pull out the heart of a story, to listen deeply, and to craft words that sound like the client but read like art.

Alongside running The Write CEO™, I also co-own a group home, King’s Circle Homes, with my sisters that supports individuals reentering society after incarceration. That work has made me a passionate advocate for second chances and personal transformation. It’s one of the reasons I created Letters to Tomorrow™ — a powerful journaling workshop that helps people process their past and write intentionally toward their future.

What I’m most proud of isn’t the celebrity projects or the high-profile campaigns—it’s The Write CEO™, the writing community I created for aspiring authors who’ve been silenced by doubt or fear. In that space, I get to help people rediscover their confidence, develop their manuscripts, and learn how to publish and market their stories with intention. We also offer transformative experiences like Letters to Tomorrow™, a powerful journaling workshop launching early next year that helps participants reflect, heal, and intentionally write their next chapter. What sets me apart is empathy and authenticity. I don’t just edit words—I nurture voices. I know what it feels like to be overlooked, to question your gift, and to wonder if your story matters. That’s why my approach blends professional strategy with genuine connection. Because when someone finally sees their words in print—their truth on paper—that’s more than writing. That’s transformation.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I love most about Houston is its diversity. It’s a city rich with culture, creativity, and opportunity—where you can meet people from all walks of life and be inspired by the mix of perspectives, traditions, and stories that make it so unique. That exposure has shaped the way I write and connect with others; it’s impossible to live here and not be influenced by the different cultures in the city.

On the flip side, Houston can feel a bit saturated in certain areas—especially in creative and entrepreneurial spaces. There’s so much talent that it can sometimes be hard to stand out or find authentic collaboration. But even that has its silver lining—it pushes you to sharpen your voice, refine your message, and stay true to what makes your work different.
