Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Nancy Gomez of Cypress

Nancy Gomez shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Nancy, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Honestly, my daily workouts have been amazing lately. They’re totally my time to reset, both mentally and physically. It just helps me show up as my best self, you know, in life and definitely behind the chair. And when I’m not doing that, I’m hanging out with my Yorkies. They just make every day feel lighter and happier. They keep me laughing and remind me to chill out and enjoy the small stuff. The workouts recharge me, and my dogs teach me patience, which really helps with the detailed work I love to do!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
At Taboo Beauty, we offer balance over burnout, and what’s real over what’s trendy. As the owner and an artist, I’m meticulous, but my focus is always on you. It’s less about following what’s popular online and more about creating a look that makes you feel confident and genuinely yourself. I want your time with me to be a restorative experience where you find a chance to recharge and connect with what feels real for you.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
Oh, when I was a kid, I 100% believed I needed to be “seen” to matter. I thought if I wasn’t in the spotlight, I wasn’t making an impact. I literally dreamed of being on TV and thought fame was the ultimate goal. Looking back, I realize that was just about excitement, not reality. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned that my value has nothing to do with attention. What actually makes me happy is peace, having a purpose, and just living a life that feels real and balanced. I don’t need everyone to see me anymore. I just want to feel proud of what I do and who I am.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Definitely a lack of confidence. That’s been the biggest thing. There were so many times I stopped myself from doing something just because I was afraid. Afraid of doing it wrong, or totally afraid of what people would think or say about me. I really let that fear of judgment hold me back. But as I’ve grown up, I’ve learned that other people’s opinions don’t define me. What matters is how I feel about myself and finding the courage to just keep going. Confidence isn’t about being perfect, it’s just about showing up, even when you’re scared, and doing it anyway.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies in our industry is that success means being crazy busy or booked out for months. The truth is, just being overworked doesn’t make you successful. Real success is about balance. It’s about taking care of your clients and yourself, setting boundaries, and creating a business where you can actually thrive, not just burn out. All the most fulfilled stylists I know have found that balance and built a career that fits their life, not the other way around.

Another big lie is that trends or social media get to define what’s “beautiful.” Real beauty and great hair come from actually understanding your client, their personality, and making them feel amazing. It’s not just about following whatever is popular online.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If immortality were real, what would you build?
This is a good question, If I could live forever, I would build something that connects my two biggest passions: beauty and animals. I’d love to create a global hair company that also gives back in a big way. A huge part of its success would go to funding a foundation for rescuing, healing, and protecting dogs all over the world.

I’ve always had such a soft spot for animals. I mean, I have six dogs myself! Anyone who knows me or even just sits in my chair knows how much I adore them. My absolute dream would be to travel the world, help neglected dogs and just spread awareness. To me, a real legacy isn’t just about what you create, but about the lives you touch. I’d want mine to show both sides of who I am: the art I pour into my work here, and the love I have for animals.
