Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Violette.
Hi Kelly, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I began my career in the Office of Neighborhoods for the City of Riverside in Southern California, where I learned so much about the importance of community building and civic engagement. That experience gave me a strong appreciation for how local government can directly impact people’s lives. From there, I transitioned into city planning—a field that immediately captured my interest.
During my time with the City of Riverside, I was involved in updating the city’s Comprehensive Plan, and that project was truly a turning point for me. It was through that process that I discovered my passion for building communities—places where people can live, work, and thrive together.
In 2006, my husband’s career brought our family to Texas, and I quickly fell in love with the City of Tomball. I’ve always had a soft spot for authentic downtowns, and Tomball has such a unique charm and sense of place. What began as admiration soon turned into a calling to help this community grow thoughtfully while preserving its character.
That journey—from neighborhood engagement to city planning to economic development—has shaped not just my career, but my purpose. I’m grateful every day to play a role in helping Tomball continue to flourish.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. Moving my family across the country from Southern California to Texas was a big adjustment—personally and professionally. Not only were we settling into a new community, but I also found myself working in one of the largest unzoned areas in the country. That presented its own set of challenges, especially coming from a state where zoning and land use regulations are highly structured.
There were moments that really tested me, but they also helped me grow and adapt quickly. I’ll never forget one of my early experiences as the City Planner for Tomball—I was presenting a rezoning case to City Council, and a gentleman in the back stood up and shouted, “Go back to California!” It was one of those moments that was both shocking and a little funny in hindsight. It reminded me that community development isn’t just about plans and policies—it’s about people and emotions, too.
Looking back, every challenge—big or small—led me to where I am today. I’m truly grateful for the journey, for the lessons learned, and for the opportunity to serve a community that I’ve grown to love so deeply.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Working in a smaller city that’s part of the greater Houston area has given me such unique opportunities. As Executive Director of the Tomball Economic Development Corporation (TEDC), I have the privilege of helping shape a community that’s growing rapidly while still holding on to its small-town charm.
Our work at the TEDC is centered around improving the quality of life for Tomball’s residents, businesses, and visitors. We focus on attracting new employers, supporting our existing businesses, and creating an environment where everyone can thrive. I’m proud to say our efforts are broad and impactful—we assist with infrastructure projects like roads, drainage, and utilities, support workforce development through programs like the Summer Youth Employment Program, and work one-on-one with local entrepreneurs to help them start, expand, and succeed.
One of my proudest achievements has been the development of our 100-acre Tomball Business & Technology Park, which has become a catalyst for economic growth in the region. I also played a role in bringing the Baker Hughes Western Hemisphere Education Center to Tomball, which has had a tremendous impact on our local economy and workforce.
Beyond those larger projects, some of my most rewarding work has come from assisting hundreds of “mom and pop” and small businesses—helping them navigate challenges, grow their customer base, and connect with the resources they need to thrive.
What truly sets Tomball apart is the breadth of what we do. Economic development here touches nearly every aspect of community life—from job creation to quality of place—and it’s deeply collaborative. I’m honored to be part of a team that cares so deeply about the people we serve.
This year, I was humbled to be recognized as Economic Developer of the Year by REDNews Magazine, which was a wonderful acknowledgment of the hard work and dedication that goes into building a strong, resilient local economy. But honestly, the real reward is seeing the impact firsthand—watching Tomball continue to grow, thrive, and maintain the character that makes it such a special place.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I do believe in luck—good and bad! My dad was born in Ireland, so maybe that belief is in my DNA. I think luck has played an interesting role in both my life and my career. Some of the best opportunities I’ve had came from being in the right place at the right time, but I also believe you make your own luck by working hard and staying open to new possibilities.
When I think about the journey that led me from California to Texas 20 years ago and eventually to Tomball, there were certainly moments that didn’t feel “lucky” at the time—moving across the country with no family nearby, adjusting to a new environment, and navigating unexpected challenges. But looking back, those experiences shaped me and led me and my family to exactly where we’re supposed to be.
So yes, I believe in luck—but I also believe that perseverance, preparation, and a positive attitude have a lot to do with turning that luck into something meaningful. And if my Irish roots have given me a bit of extra good fortune along the way, I’ll gladly take it!
