Today we’d like to introduce you to Hernan Martinez.
Hi Hernan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born into a family of immigrants, both of my parents are from Mexico. There was always a lot of music through out the regular day by day in the house, so it was inevitable to not be caught by the rythm of latin music. That being said the curiosity of how music was created roamed in me since I was a child. Once reaching my early teens the opportunity to learn how to play music presented itself in middle school and that was the start to this journey. Later on I went to San Jacinto College and studied audio production and engineering. Also learning about music history and music writing. Once graduated from college in 2020, I decide to start this Rock en Español musical project named “Izél”. There was a lot of images and stories that I had to tell the world. The songs created tell my personal stories, depression, the being a son of immigrants, finding love, the feeling of running out of time, situations that I feel other humans can connect with. My Dad is one of the most hard working persons that I know, him alongside my mom and uncles thought me how to work and give my best in everything I do, so the combination of the hard work thought by my parents and the creative world that I wanted to share with others has given me great opportunities, like playing in Mexico City, Chicago, Laredo, and also opening shows for internationally known musical acts here in Houston, TX. I’m excited to keep working, this is just the start, and I’m ready to see where this is going to take me and everyone else that is involved one way or another.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. Some of the obstacles have been starting this project by myself and finding musicians that share the same goal and vision as me, which is take this onto the biggest stages possible. Another obstacle is the music business itself, things like music platforms make it a little difficult to actually earn money from this so you have to find alternate ways to grow in this business. But nothing good is easy in life.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m the musical director, composer and writer of my own music. My rock en español music is known to create a visual image of the stories I want to share adding atmospheric sounds and actual recordings of day by day sounds. I am really proud of actually doing this and not giving up, because rock en español is not the biggest genre of music out there as of right now. What sets me apart is simply who I am, in all honesty everyone is unique, and I think that’s what sets everyone apart, it’s what makes life fun and interesting.
What’s next?
I’m looking forward to see where this is going, a new song is about to be released, and I have recently learned more about music marketing so that can definitely help this career and take it new places. The plans have stayed pretty consistent which is share my music with the world and connect with as many people as it can.
